Tencent to Announce MapleStory2 1st Chinese Close Beta Schedule

Since Tencent Games announced to publish MapleStory2 in China, there has been little information about the game. Recently, Tencent finally announced the details of 1st close beta test schedule and the related information of localization process.

M: Korean version of MapleStory2 has been officially open beta test in July 2015. How's the progress of localization of Chinese version? When the 1st close beta test begin? 
P: Now the Chinese version is under preparation. Although Korean version of MapleStory2 has been officially open beta test in July 2015, but we confirmed to agent MapleStory2 in December. And the Chinese version is our top priority so that our development and operation team want to make it perfect. The specific time of close beta test of MapleStory2 in China is still not entirely sure, but we will announce the schedule shortly after.

M: Count for Magic Swordman, Korean version of MapleStory2 has 9 characters in total. Will Chinese version update all these characters as same as Korean version?
P: It depends. Now the whole project is under discussion.


M: If not, which character will be revealed early? Will there be the exclusive character?
P: MapleStory2 has always been based on diversified professional characteristics. Chinese version will hold on it. And current opening 8 characters will open as a preferred choice. The exclusive characters in Chinese version is not yet confirmed.
 
M: In addition to the characters, will the game have more Chinese elements such as special Dungeons and map games added in the process of localization? 
P: This is both development and operations teams’ hope. And we will  solicit the opinions of the players to promote our game. At the same time, in addition to the traditional Chinese elements, we want to be more fashionable and follow Chinese characteristic elements which suits for the market trend. 

M: PVP seems very mediocre in Korean version of MapleStory2. What do we do for PVP content? Should we readjust greatly or inherit it directly?


P: It is our common goal to strength PVP content. And we will inherit and promote the current content. New PVP gameplay is also under development.

Dead by Daylight: New Horror MMO from the Developer of Eternal Crusade

Behaviour Interactive is the developer of the MMO shooter Warhammer 40000: Eternal Crusade. They just announced a new horror title named Dead by the Daylight. At this point we know:
- 1 killer will hunt players.
- You will be able to work with other players in group or just play alone.
- You can use all sorts of things around you, and develop new skills.
- The world is created using procedural generation system.
- There will be several types of murderers. So you have to try all sorts of unique skills to make fun of the players.

Monster Hunter Online - New Weapon Spear Comes in Next Update

Monster Hunter Online will get an update after Chinese Spring Festival. At the same time, a new weapon- Spear will debut in this update. The new version is expected to be launched in February or March.

As another classic monster hunter weapon in Monster Hunter, spear is quite different from other GunLance typed weapons that were updated in Spring Festival. Although they are both attack-defense integrated, spear has wider attack range, higher hit point and can suppress the monsters effectively. The cutting edge of spear is that it can switch from attack and defense in the process of counter-attack rapidly. With dash skills, spear can approach to monsters rapidly and safely, thus attack them persistently.

Daybreak Holding A New Building Competition In Landmark

It seems like Daybreak is intent on showing that they are still working on Landmark, and that there is still hope for Everquest Next. After last week's Claim time and camera update, this time it is with a building competition that they decide to interact with the community.

The Landmarks of Landmark are visually interesting and striking builds located at each island’s central portal hub, to provide a point of visual interest and inspiration. The previous competition winners can currently be seen by portal hubs in Landmark Closed Beta, and now we’re inviting you to help us update them! Winning landmarks may be used during Beta and/or in our live game, and will be credited with the builder’s name.

The deadline for submissions is on February 25th, while winners will be picked in March through player votes.

Blade & Soul Review - A Tedious Journey To Perfection

Blade & Soul is one of these free MMORPG that was highly expected by the western community. Indeed, this title that came with a lot of promises, is considered it as one of the greatest successes in the recent years, with large tournaments taking place in Korea. The game is regardless rather dated, having taken over 3 years to make it to the west. This is largely due to the fact that the developers have taken the time to rebalance the game to a Western audience, especially in regards the scenario and dubbed voices.
 

China: its culture, its architecture
With a Wuxia setting, Blade & Soul's scenario remains relatively conventional. This does not mean that it was poorly designed, as you will soon discover. Specifically, the bulk of the story focuses on betrayals and the quest for power. Specifically, the frame is centered on two nations that are the country Woon in the West and the Empire Poon-je to the east. Divided into four continents, one of the four leaders decided to bear allegiance to the dark forces, releasing the darkness and evil in every corner of the world. Our martial arts master went into battle to prevent the spread of darkness but was, unfortunately, defeated. As an apprentice martial artist, our role will be to avenge our master and try to end the terror that hangs over the country. The game consists of several well-distributed acts that progressively move the plot. This requires several cutscenes highlighting the main protagonists and their implications in the conflict. The opening scene seduced many, thanks to the graphics and spectacular effects, all with a soundtrack that borders on perfection. In any case, if you enjoy the world of martial arts and ninjas, Blade & Soul's setting will definitely interest you.

A deep character creation
Obviously, before controlling their martial arts young prodigy, players will need to create one through a rather complete editor. While it is no Black Desert, the options of the character creator offered by Blade & Soul are simply gargantuan. First, we start by selecting one of the four races that we are offered: the Gon, Jin, Yun and Lyn. Each of these races is associated with a number of classes that suit their lore. For example, in the case of the Gon, they represent a particularly robust people, involving methods of combat-related related classes that require a high physical and mental strength. As such, the Destroyer class is restricted to their race. We will not get into the specifics of each class, but note that they all have a background that will be totally different from one to another, some being more difficult to play than others. As such, it shouldn't be too hard for players to create a unique character that suits their playstyle.



A colorful world
Everything should now be ready for you to live an incredible adventure. Players wake up in a small villa from where they are summoned by a chief instructor to continue their training in martial arts chosen during the character creation. What is obvious during our trips from one NPC to another, it is that, despite the game being rather dated, the graphics displayed by Blade & Soul are not going to beat around the bush: the title is a true work of art. The environments are very detailed, while the visual effects are absolutely spectacular. It is not uncommon to stop every few minutes to admire the scenery you will encounter. It must be said that this MMO is based on engine CryEngine 3, which has already proven itself in the past (Crysis, Cabal 2 and Warface, in particular). Also, while the character modeling is certainly a little cliche, it is perfectly consistent with the universe in which the game is set. As if that were not enough, the interface is simple and intuitive, besides being customizable at will.

A dynamic combat system
As a Korean MMORPG, it is obvious that you can not escape phases where you will kill monsters one after another. Thankfully, the combat system helps make this less tedious. As you’d expect of a martial arts MMO, clashes are based primarily on combos, giving an extremely dynamic side to the game. Classes also have a gauge: the Focus, the Chi or the Spirit. Represented by a dozen spheres, this gauge lets use combos to activate the different powers you have, knowing that it regenerates after each successful combo chain. In conclusion, the combat system is particularly fluid and is very respectful of the Wuxia culture, making it particularly suited to the proposed universe.

The character development is well designed
If you are familiar with the MMORPG genre, you should have no trouble taking Blade & Soul in hand. Indeed, completing various quests (the latter often asking to go kill monsters, useless to deny it), you'll earn experience points that allow you to level up. In terms of features, everything is automated, with your only role being which skills and class competencies to learn and upgrade. This aspect allows for numerous character builds in regards to the fighting, but this free MMORPG incorporates another welcomed feature: customizing skills. In other words, every attack and every ability can change depending on a number of multiple choices. This means that skills will obtain new effects according to your playstyle, for example, allowing a capacity to deal a devastating blow, or to add a bleeding effect. Skill personalization is reversible, which is all the more interesting because you can adjust the build of your avatar according to the tasks you want to accomplish (quests, PvP, dungeons, etc). In fact, a player would not, and should not, use the same fighting style in PvP and in PvE. A PvP style would focus on large single target damage, rooting and knockdowns, while a PvE one would focus on crowd control skills and devastating AoEs.
 

Well you take some PvE
If you were paying attention, you should know that the adventure is divided into acts cut into several chapters, advancing the story slowly but surely towards its end. Dungeons, with a total of 25 being available at launch, will be your best source of PvE content. These dungeons are not to be taken lightly, as they represent the main recovery method of rare equipment. This is especially true when you get to the boss room, usually requiring a very good team cohesion. As a reminder, no healer class is offered in Blade & Soul, asking a very good management of your potions, as well as knowing when to attack, and when to block or dodge. Unfortunately, this does nothing to attenuate the feeling that the questing system, on which you will be spending the majority of your time, is awfully dated. Far from being original, the quests will ask you to kill monsters, fetch items, talk to NPCs, complete objectives in instanced areas, and so on. While this is not unusual for MMORPGs, it remains quite tiring, especially for MMO veterans that have played over a dozen of similar games.
 
PvP saving the day
If you need some motivation to get through the quests of Blade & Soul, the PvP features might do just that. By far one of the best aspects of the game, the PvP system, and especially the 1 vs 1 arena fights, is extremely well thought. To the point where there are Koren tournaments that are on par with MOBA competitions. The reason behind this is that, unlike what you’d expect of other games, here it is your skill as a player that matters the most, not the quality of your gear, or the amount of upgrades you gave them. While these do help with your damage and defense capabilities, they have little impact against a skilled opponent that is constantly knocking you down. In addition to this, early on in the game, players are offered the choice between several factions. Once selected, you will be given a special outfit that, when worn, immediately puts you in a PvP mode. Put simply, when wearing this outfit, you can attack, and be attacked by, players from other factions that are also wearing their outfits, and that anywhere on the map. That way, players that wish to delve into PvP can do so to their heart’s content, while those that only wish to quest peacefully can do so unbothered. Personally, I believe Blade & Soul to have a PvP system that is close to perfection, assuming that you stay long enough to reach the max level.
 

Free-to-play in all its splendor
If the game still holds your interest, you'll be pleased to know that the game is purely free-to-play. There are items in the cash shop that will allow you to reach the max level faster, but there is no question here of being more powerful than a player not spending money. Blade & Soul uses the Ncoin cash shop currently, already used in other games NCsoft. This currency also gives players the opportunity to purchase various potions experience or expand slots in your inventory, but also to acquire cosmetics and exclusive familiars. However, all these objects can also be obtained in the game using a standard currency (granted, it takes time to acquire). Finally, remember that a premium subscription is also part of the economic model and has its advantages, still limited to progression boosts, however. Blade & Soul, without a doubt, benefits from a healthy economic model in a sea of Pay-to-Win MMORPGs.

Conclusion
Blade & Soul gave the 2016 F2P MMORPG scene a strong start. With a catchy universe, an extensive character customization, a dynamic combat system, an interesting progression, several dungeons and outstanding PvP content, the title shouldn’t have had anything to envy of the competition. Unfortunately, the dated questing system put a heavy strain on the community, mostly due to their high expectations of the game. Nonetheless, if you manage to get through the storyline to truly enjoy the PvP aspect, the game truly holds a lot of potential.

Blizzard may offer free World of Warcraft to those who go to cinema for Warcraft film. They are considering a World of Warcraft: Ultimate Movie Edition which includes the base game, all expansions before Legion, and one month's game time.
 
This idea is packed in an official survey (see the image below) Blizzard sends to players. Obviously this offer mainly aims at movie fans as well as those who have quit the game.

Robocraft Teases A New Feature

Robocraft is by far one of the most promising MOBAs of its kind. For those not familiar with it, Robocraft is a bot building game, allowing players to be as creative as they wish to be to create various kinds of bots, that they can use to fight. With 7 different kinds of weapons and 8 means of propulsions, its hardly surprising to see why it has been so popular.

As if that wasn't enough, the developers are constantly releasing new content and balancing updates for the game, for the better or for the worse.

Open World Survival Game Conan Exiles Releases 3 New Screenshots & A Video

Not long ago, Funcom announced their latest open world multiplayer title Conan Exiles where you can expect fast combat with bloody and bone-crushing attacks on both PvE and PvP. Conan Exiles is slated for Early Access on the PC this summer. Today Funcom released 3 new screenshots and a brand new behind-the-scenes video offering a further look into Conan Exiles.



Conan Exiles is an open-world survival game set in the brutal lands of Conan the Barbarian, the world's greatest fantasy hero. The game can be played on private and public servers, either in multiplayer or local single-player. You start out as an exile, one of thousands cast out to fend for themselves in a barbaric wasteland, and from there you must hunt for food, grow crops, gather resources, craft tools and weapons, and build a shelter.



New Survival MMO Grimm: Dark Legacy Based on NBC Show Grimm Announced

Gamesco, the publisher behind Titan Siege, today announced Grimm: Dark Legacy, a new survival MMO based on the popular NBC drama series Grimm. Grimm: Dark Legacy will take place several hundred years before the TV's show's contemporary setting and challenges players to survive as a Grimm ancestor in the Old World. The game will be free-to-play and is currently developed by Norwegian developer Artplant, planning to launch in mid-2016.

Grimm: Dark Legacy based heavily on the TV show and will feature tactical survival combat, exploration, mission-based gameplay and co-operative multiplayer experiences. The game will encourage players to explore the expansive Old World while completing different types of missions to win rewards, transform themselves and their equipment and become formidable Grimm hunters. Combat will also be integral to the gameplay with gamers having to fend off ferocious Wesen attacks by equipping a wide variety of weapons similar to the ones that Nick wields in the series.

Devil May Cry Style Action MMORPG God Slayer Reveals New Healer Class

God Slayer is a CryEngine 3 action MMORPG developed by Chinese MMO company ChangYou. The game features action style and flashy air combos inspired by Devil May Cry. Besides, the game is joined by ex-Ninja Gaiden developer Tomonobu Itagaki.
 
Recently ChangYou revealed a new healer class which is easy to play and designed for new players. She uses music as weapon and gets 5 abilities, 4 of which are healing skills. You can see some of the abilities of the female character below.

Blizzard Released Q4 2015 Financial Report; WoW Remained No.1 Subscription MMO

According to Activision Blizzard's Q4 2015 financial report released recently, the company received a 20 increase in revenue compared with last year. Since Blizzard has stopped revealing World of Warcraft's subscription number, we don't know how many subscribers the game has. However, Blizzard notes in the report that WoW is still the No. 1 subscription MMORPG in the market.


 
On the other hand, the next expansion Legion will still release this summer, following the release of Warcraft movie in June 2016. The report also confirms that Destiny 2 will come in 2017, with a large expansion for Destiny being planned for later this year.

Upcoming RTS Game Titled Battleplans Finally Hits on Android Soon

En Masse Entertainment has announced that they will be publishing C4M's new real-time strategy game called Battleplans. Check out the trailer below. Players who are interested can take part in the closed beta



Battleplans, as mentioned above, is an RTS game but it does have a bit of a twist to it. Essentially each player will have an offensive and defensive phase, which means that this game focuses more on tactics. Players can chose to lead attacks on resource-rich territories controlled by NPCs or players. Then you can devise comprehensive defense strategies to maintain control of those conquered territories when other players attack.

 Features:

· Real-time Tactics: Make decisions quickly that turn the tide of battle.


· Competitive Play: Dominate the map. Plan, attack, and defend on your schedule.
· Intuitive Controls: Easy to learn and fun to master.

· Cross-platform: Attack on your tablet. Defend on your phone. Plan on your PC.
· Battle Planning: Choose from a mix of unique heroes and units for both attack and defense.

So with the two phases, this makes Battleplans a bit of a different type of RTS game. Right now there is a closed beta testing phase planning to start later this month for PC. Once that is done, and the developers make any tweaks that they may need to do, Battleplans will then get released onto Android, iOS, and PC sometime later this Spring. The Biggest Changes and Censorship in Western Localization of Blade&Soul

As some of you may know Blade & Soul has been released in six different localizations, Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, North America, European and Russian. I have played both Korean with English patch and the western versions of the game and as such I couldn’t help, but notice the huge changes and censorship that the other localizations suffered.

And no! I’m not referring only to the revealing costumes and underwear (pervs :P )

NCsoft had officially announced prior to release, that there will only be no changes between the two versions, only to let us down a few months later by presenting us their heavily modified version of Blade&Soul.
Naturally, many players were seriously disappointed over this, because they were looking forward to enjoy the original game translated.

But what are those changes everyone is making a fuss about?
Let's take a quick look at them:
  1. Story was heavily altered. Now, here I want to mention that all localizations have altered the story a bit, to better fit it to their country’s audience, but the BIG difference is that they have managed to make it work. On the other hand, on the Western version as the story progressed, inconsistencies started to arise. Personally, I’m a huge fan of the story in videos games in general, even MMOs and since I’ve heard the best about the Korean version’s story, I was quite disappointed to read a story that was based on the stereotypical good guy(player) and the cartoonish evil antagonists and not the original as it was intended to be told. Unfortunately,
    Not even the cutscenes escaped the censorship.
  2. Another element that suffered was, as I’ve mentioned above, outfits, underwear and character poses. Also, they took the original lingerie and turned them into a cash shop item, something that caused quite a stir too.
  3. Names and Locations. Now, this one is not something that really bugs me, because I don’t really pay attention to it, but there still seem to be people who don't like those changes. I’m referring of course to the fact that many locations have been translated rather strangely and the end result was somehow weird.
    For instance, Corrupted Spirits Cavern/The Darkglimpse. The Darkglimpse seems like it was named for the particular portion of the story quest that happens in there, like the dungeon doesn't actually have its own name or place in the world.
    Also the characters’ names and surnames that have been conflated into one name, such as in the original Do Chun' has a son named 'Do Dan; naming them 'Dochun' and 'Dodan'.
  4. Some side quests have been completely revamped, because the localization team found their content offensive. This one, called "A Scholarly Path" was one of them that was completely changed, you can read the whole story behind the quest at this thread(SPOILER WARNING) from the official forum.
 
Lastly, and that’s not directly a localization issue, but concerns the localization team whose actions have invoked the disdain of the general community. It has been said that the localization team have been going on in their forums and have been deleting posts which criticize their choices, instead of forwarding the complaints to the developers who are working on the western version.
To sum things ups, I would like to quote some of the players’ opinions, I’ve found in fans’ forums, that speak about the changes and the censorship.
  • My only problems is that changing the story was a unnecessary change to begin with and it changes the character personality to a fair degree
  • A great deal of Jinsoyun's character was her apathy. Like crushing a bug. She's very powerful, and she knows it. At that part in the Chinese translation she likens the player character to a vermin or rat to kill. She's very cold but at the same time not above relishing in a victory. The current localization however, wants her to be a cartoon villain. Her dialog is very informal and her current VA makes her sound melodramatic and overacted.
  • This censorship is hiding away cultural aspects of the eastern areas. They are insulting the players, the creator of the game, and ultimately changing and removing the culture, history, and folk lore of the eastern part of our world. The fact that this game has an Asian theme is for many the reason they started playing. Probably, the ones who will keep playing this game far after launch are the ones who love this type of setting. They don't want the world of Blade & Soul to be westernized, they just want it translated.

With the new patch, the most rewarding quests to level up your HongMoon level are:

- Mushin tower
- Pohwaran dungeon 24-man
- Pohwaran dungeon 6/4-man
- Blood Shade Harbor 24-man
- Blood Shade Harbor 6/4-man
- All 4 Moonwater dungeons
- Hogshead Pasture Beach + Misty Woods Faction Quests
- All Misty Woods Dailies
 
Those quest should net you roughly with 220k EXP without Dragon Soup which can be used to boost your EXP gain. In total that's 33% which means 2 more days until level up.

Of course, once you reach the cap for the daily quests, you can go to the Arena and play PVP which gives you EXP too

Total EXP needed for HongMoon level 5 = 3,788,000. Below you can see a chart with the exact numbers regarding HongMoon levels.

Blade & Soul - 3v3 Arena Matches in Need for Improvements?

Blade & Soul as you very well know is a PVP focused game that features both 1v1 duels,
3v3 team matches and hopefully soon enough 6v6 battlegrounds.

Despite having two modes though, players tend to avoid playing 3v3 matches in general or they play them only for the dailies, because as many of them have said and I agree they are quite chaotic.
Unlike 1v1, which  is a lot about managing your cooldowns and measuring your opponent;
in 3v3 another player can just jump right in and start bashing you while you have burnt your escape….
It’s gg for you!

On the other hand though, 3v3 is all about cooperation and I have to admit that it feels quite rewarding when you manage to pull off some SICK combos with your teammates.

Crowfall - Skills Currency and Naval Combat

The least that can be said is that the developers of Crowfall have been actively working on their skill system this month. After the release of a Skill FAQ and a Skill Tree, they are now talking about the connection between skills and currency.

Of course, they explain they are not talking about currency in its basic form (Gold, Silver, etc), but rather as some sort of "offering" to use your skills, such as mana. To be more specific, they talk about how, for example, players can convert accumulated rage into damage, while sacrificing some of their health in the process.

Finally, while they stated that at the moment they were not working on it, they were planning and discussing how to add naval combat in the game.
