Gaming Corps, a Swedish game studio composed of industry veterans, is giving a tantalizing look into the story and gameplay of their upcoming episodic post-apocalyptic thriller, The Descendant. With the first episode arriving on March 24, this new in-game video for The Descendant showcases key gameplay and character-driven moments from the first episode. The Descendant is a five-part episodic adventure game series where every choice the player makes can influence the fate of mankind. Download the latest trailer and read on for more info.

Set in the near future, climate change has wrecked the planet, and a man-made extinction event has rendered Earth unsustainable for human life.

In order to survive this catastrophic collapse, a coalition formed from the world’s governments invite people to carry out aptitude tests, resulting in only a few thousand ‘descendants of humanity’ hand-picked to survive the apocalypse, cryogenically suspended in underground bunkers known as Arks until the world recovers from the impending nuclear holocaust. When news breaks of what the coalition intend to achieve, people flock to the government’s tests with demand for sanctuary far outweighing the spaces available. Only a few are selected -- those with certain undisclosed traits. Why were they chosen? What genetic qualities was the government looking for in these individuals to reseed the planet?

While the descendants sleep through the apocalypse, teams of janitors aren’t quite so lucky – their life underground spent ensuring that each of the Arks, scattered across the world, are carefully maintained so that one day, their precious cargo may wake from its slumber to repopulate the Earth, and build the new world envisioned by the coalition. Centuries pass. Earth becomes habitable again. The descendants are awakened and begin climbing out of storage — except one, Ark-01.

Players awake to explore the dangerous Ark-01 facility, both in the past, immediately after the outbreak of the ecological disaster, and in the present time of the world, seeking any survivors while unraveling a mysterious conspiracy in the process. What do the descendants do next? How do they restart, and "Was humanity worth saving?"

The first of five episodes of The Descendant will be available on Steam starting March 24. An “Exclusive Season 1 Bundle” is available now from the game’s official website until 48 hours before the first episode releases. This pre-launch bundle includes all five episodes of the game (with episodes 2 -5 to be released over the course of 2016), grants players 48-hours early access to each episode, and features a full game Soundtrack, a Digital Poster and a Digital Art Book.

EverQuest Next Is Cancelled; Project Is Too Ambitious for Current Technology

Daybreak Game Company finally confirms that the development of EverQuest Next is terminated, after a long time not revealing anything new about the game. The reason, according to the company, is the game requires a lot of resources as many cutting edge technologies are involved (you can see them in the related articles at the bottom). It’s a very ambitous project and for now, Daybreak Game Company believes they can't deliver what they promised at the announcement. So a hard decision is made, EverQuest Next won’t be coming out, not in the near future.

Russell Shanks, President of Daybreak Games told MMORPG.com about why EQN was cancelled:

With EQN we set out with lofty goals, and when the game vision came together, it required us to push our boundaries in just about every facet of game development – voxel world tech, dynamic and motivation-based AI systems, and fully 3D, vast, real-time, modifiable gameplay spaces are just a few examples.

Creating systems in and of themselves is time and resource consuming; trailblazing new technology is even more so. Ultimately, we realized that cutting some features or going with a piecemeal solution was not going to deliver on the original vision or hit the expected quality bar.

WildStar May Be Shut Down in a Few Months – Report

Today is a dark day for MMORPG world — EverQuest Next is cancelled and now WildStar lays off about 60 employees. Worse thing is that WildStar could also get shut down, as Polygon said that they received tips from anonymous source, saying that "Those (employees) remaining only have a couple months left before Wildstar 'coasts into the sunset'".

The source also claimed the actual number of layoff is over 70, which is as much as 40 percent of the studio's total workforce.

WildStar Looking for a girl

For now, Wildstar will remain operational and will continue to get new update, according to NCSoft representative Omeed Dariani. However, the game cancelled the Chinese localization and release. He wrote a post at Wildstar forum:

Hi Folks,

Earlier this morning, Carbine Studios completed a reorganization of its operating structure. Moving forward, the studio will focus on operating and updating WildStar as a live game in the US and Europe. As part of this change, the studio has canceled its plans to bring WildStar to China.

Unfortunately, as a result of these changes, we’ve had to reduce staff. These cuts are directly tied to WildStar’s evolution from a product in development to a live title, to the cancellation of work to bring WildStar to China, and to the overall performance of WildStar since launch in 2014.

These kinds of decisions are exceptionally difficult. The talented and passionate professionals who are impacted by these cuts have been valuable team members and respected colleagues. We wish everyone well for the future and will be providing severance and employment search assistance.

As for WildStar, we remain committed to the game. Over the next few weeks and months we will deliver a significant update to the game, kick off a variety of community events, and continue our work on new content that we will talk more about in the near future.

Blizzard has finally announced the new expansion for its card game Hearthstone. Named 'Whispers of the Old Gods', the announcement was made at the ongoing North American Spring Tournament earlier today. Beside the company also released first cinematic trailer for the next expansion.

Four Legendary Old Gods cards will arrive with Whispers of the Old Gods, and they’re horribly eager to lend their eldritch might to your collection. C’Thun, Yogg-Saron, Y’Shaarj, and N’Zoth all stand (sit? squirm? writhe?) ready to unleash indescribable power upon your opponents.

C’Thun is especially tickled to lend you its aid: a Legendary C’Thun card and two Beckoner of Evil cards lie waiting to add the unutterable awesomeness of the Old Gods to your collection. Just open your first Old Gods card pack to collect these questionable new allies.

Starting March 14, players will be able to pre-purchase a 50-pack bundle of Whispers of the Old Gods card packs for $49.99 USD prior to the Expansion’s official release.

Battleborn Incursion Mode Brings First-Person Shooter to the MOBA World

There are numbers of team-based shooters in the market, and only the creative new mode can make a game stand out from the rest. 2K and Gearbox have recently posted a new blog to reveal the Incursion mode in Battleborn

Incursion Mode brings a first-person shooter to the MOBA world. Two teams of players are dropped in the middle of a map and charged with finding and destroying Sentry Bots and claiming territory.

The goal is pretty simple: March your minions into enemy territory, make your way to their two Sentry bots, then destroy ‘em. Getting there is the tricky part. But the other team is aiming to do the same exact thing. So the game quickly becomes a balancing act of defending your turf and escorting waves of minions on the assault.

In addition, players can not only build tactical structures in the battleground, but also recruite powerful Thrall mercenaries. These buildables can then be upgraded using Shards to make them more efficient and more resistant to enemy attacks.

Mobile Game Review - Robocide: The First "True" RTS for Mobile

$
0
0
One of the reasons I was drawn to Robocide, was the connection to their community. As I read through the discussion boards, the first thing I noticed was the communication they had with players during their soft launch. The higher level players were stressing concern over the matchmaking system, and within a week they released an update that solved the issue. Knowing now the devs are on our side, the download finished quickly and I began the brief tutorial.

The main layout reminds me of a windows phone, attractive and simple. But thankfully they didn't copy windows intrusive data needs or advertising pressure. Actually, Robocide did an amazing job hiding their advertisements - bravo on the clean game. I learned how to play the game within minutes, granted I know RTS games - I feel anyone will pick it up just as fast, very low learning curve.

Gameplay
You are the commander of a Space Robot fleet tasked to defend your base, destroy enemy missile silos, and conquer the entire map. To do this you are put in control of a home base that spawns various mechs. Your main mech, the unit that reminds me a lot of mobile game “Tactile Wars”, is the Bots. These units fight and capture energy from destroyed enemy bots, and return them back to your base to produce more energy. (Kinda like a mana system.) You are also allotted two Titans which have three unique abilities, these are your main damage dealers and strategic proponents.

In single player mode; you save the world by completing various tasks and quests. Each level's difficulty gets harder as you progress and you are forced to make upgrades to your Titans, your Homebase, and your Bots. These upgrades allow you to accumulate points for a higher character level which opens up more gameplay options. Once you acquire three Titans the arena opens up for multiplayer. With one touch intuitive RTS controls and a live PVP arena, I can proudly welcome Robocide to the mobile Real-Time Strategy genre.

Value
It seems that through questing you can acquire the most items for your inventory. Spending your money in the store is not worth it, this is because they force you to reset the store for diamonds once you purchase the only “four” items of the day. What this seems to be doing is putting a lot of importance on the diamonds, which is real currency. You can also acquire these diamonds doing quests, or completing challenges but the amount needed for any use in the store warrants real money.

This game definitely rides the line of a Pay-To-Win and a great value game. This line is strong where they made the Titan strategies and your Bots gameplay a winning factor. But I start to worry when you can mass purchase equipment (ahem* Clash Royale) and the scaling to get these diamonds through grinding feels completely unrealistic. Because of these reasons Robicides current value sits at unfair.

Multiplayer
As mobile game in the real time strategy genre, offering “live” PVP - this game definitely sits in my top 10. This is where you can definitely spot the people who Paid-to-Win and who actually fought to get where they are on the ladder. Your strategy is key when climbing the ladder, your robot strength can only get you so far. I find myself switching between a different strategies every match, this means there is a certain threshold we're Paying-to-Win doesn't provide any more advantage.

There is definitely going to be a strong meta when it comes to Titans in Robocide. Currently there isn't enough Titans that provide strong enough battle effects to stray away from the your main dmg dealer and tank.  That being said, games tend to get boring when the same strategies are attempted, and you can just cut and paste your winning play each match. I am looking forward to update that will give us a wider range of Titan choices, and maybe lowering the diamond ratio.

Creativity
When I first opened the game my wife told me that this game looks a lot like Starcraft. Which I had to give her credit because that was the same thought that came to my mind after the download finished. The nostalgia went away as soon as I played the first mission but the same level of thought involved kept me playing for hours. Unlike a lot of games that allow you to use brute force to win matches, newb techniques like that will only win you a small percent.

Robocide forces you to think outside of a free control RTS box but still gives you enough strategic customizability to play like you need to. Cramming so much action into a stationary screen without causing confusion or clutter was another magic trick in itself. If it wasn't for a few bugs here and there this game would have earned my first 9/10, but unfortunately the value is unfair and I have to relaunch my game every once in awhile after watching an ad for free diamonds.

Hearthstone - When, Why and What Cards to Play Around in Arena

$
0
0
Playing around certains cards in arena is a skill you definitely want to learn if you seek to become infinite or just better at arena in general. In this article I will talk about situations when you should or shouldn’t play around cards since playing around them often decreases your win percentage. Because of that it is important to understand when, how and what cards you should play around in order to increase your win chances and in addition increase your average win rate. So next time when your board gets wiped on turn 7 with Flamestrike don’t blame it on your rng or how crazy your opponent deck is because it is partially your fault so take responsability.

Why play around opponent’s cards?

A good question you may ask - why bother playing around cards? Some people might play around a card when in reality their opponent doesn’t even have it. Playing around cards lessens the value of your opponent’s cards in exchange to investing less resources on the board or just playing your cards in other distributions. Of course it is a risk/reward kind of situation where you evaluate if playing around cards lessens or improves your chances of winning that particular game.

When to play around cards?

Most of the time since playing around cards is a risky thing to do if you are behind on the board, tempo wise or in terms of card advantage you should avoid playing around most cards since by playing around them and investing less resources on the board you risk of getting overrun completely and if you do get destroyed by a card which you did not play around even though after the game it seemed like a good idea to play around it however given the situation in the game most of the time the correct play will be not to play around certain cards. When you are ahead the situation is entirely different. When you are ahead is the time when you can get completely destroyed by AoE like Flamestrike the most which may turn a 90% chance to win into a simple 50/50. When you are ahead you must play around cards that have the potential to completely swing the board advantage. Usually since you are ahead you won’t need to invest too many more resources since you should be winning either way if you are miles ahead on your opponent. So remember that you want to play around cards only when you are either ahead on the board. If you are equal on the board it is very situational when you should or shouldn’t play around certain cards and depends on specific given cases. And last point to mention is you should play around cards more often if your opponent has a lot of cards in hand since your opponent is a lot more likely to have Flamestrike if he has 10 cards in hand than he is if he has only 1. You can take this step further and notice which cards have been sitting in your opponent’s hand for a while. If there are cards that your opponent holds on for long amounts they are either very conditional or have high mana cost. Usually deck trackers show at which turn your opponent drew a card so you can get a better insight of what cards your opponent may be holding. For example if your opponent Mage has been holding onto a card since turn 1 and next turn he will have 7 mana it is very likely the card is Flamestrike and therefore you should play around it by playing minions with 5 or more health on the board.

What cards to play around?

First thing to consider if you should play around a certain card is it’s rarity. We all know that common cards are the most common, followed by rare, epic and legendary. A good rule of thumb is not to play around epic and legendary cards at all since you will see them played very rarely and if you play around them often times you will decrease your chances to win a game more often than you would increase them by playing around epic or legendary cards.
Another good rule to follow is not to play around neutral cards. Class cards are twice as likely to be offered in a draft so therefore more often you will  see them played against you and when playing around them more times than not your opponent will have them in hand.
So now that we figured you should play around common and rare class cards you need to identify if the card you want to play around swings the board or puts you in a big disadvantage. For example it is turn 6 and my opponent Shaman hasn’t used Hex at all. Here I have 2 options - I could play Boulderfist Ogre or play a Chillwind yeti and a Bloodfen Raptor. The correct play is to play 2 minions instead of 1 big one. If you go with the Ogre play and your opponent uses Hex against you he effectively gains 4 mana worth of tempo advantage which in turn lets him grab the board and put you at a big disadvantage compared to what happened if you played 2 minions which weren’t that big. You want to bait out hard removal so your opponent can’t use it efficiently to gain an advantage. Another thing: if your opponent already used 2 copies of the card before you don’t want to play around them anymore for the rest of the game since having 3 copies of say a Consecration is very unlikely and you will lose more by playing around it than not. And lastly usually after a Hearthstone expansion Blizzard increase offering rates for cards from that expansion (TGT cards received a bonus after TGT was released, LoE cards received a bonus after LoE was released and etc.) so remember which impactful cards got released with the latest expansion and remember to play around them.

Mobile Game Review - Lords of War: Royal Melee

$
0
0

The Clones are coming back as a new plethora of MMORPGs are being released in our app stores. The first one want to introduce you to it's called Lords of War: Royal Melee. The game starts as all your traditional RPGs do. You are introduced into your four character classes Rogue, Warrior, Mage, and of course the Paladin. Immediately taking you into the storyline, you are given your full abilities to demonstrate late combat potential. As a cutscene fades away you are reduced into your basic character, with no equipment, skills, or levels.

Gameplay
The gameplay is smooth as I didn't see or experience any bugs. But adventuring through the campaign felt exactly like every other mobile RPG. Sure you might have a slightly different storyline or maybe your abilities look a little different as well, I'm pretty sure every mobile RPG is running the same engine, so you’re going to get that same repetitive feeling. Smashing the standard monsters for points, then gaining levels that seem to be slight variations the previous ones brings zero imagination and no real Adventure.

The home screen contains various play options but each of them is exactly like every other mobile RPG. I found absolutely nothing new in this game that I haven't already found in a similar mobile RPG that I've played last year.

Value
This is the only strong suit Lords of War possesses. Within each Quest you were able to obtain equipment suitable for each level. Although, with a quick visit the store showed me that $5 - $10 can probably make you invincible during the campaign. That indicates this game is hands-down Pay-to-Win, so - if you intend on making it anywhere on the multiplayer ladder, then go ahead and drop $5. Sure the value is fair and grinding might put you on an even field, but where is the fun in dropping money for epic equipment when the game has a  full campaign?!?!?
Complete sell out franchise.

Multiplayer
This game has definitely geared its multiplayer system towards the Battle Arena. In each zone you can tell the use of individual servers, which sadly excludes our favorite - open world feel. The fighting system runs pretty smooth and the hitboxes are large compared to your actual characters. This makes landing combos fairly simple but distracts from any strategic fighting. In advertising, this game says it's geared for North American players, I'm guessing that means it's intended for TapRPG players because this game has no actual combos??? What a waste of game developers time.

Creativity
The reason why I am bringing attention to this game is not because it has any potential for creativity. This game is a perfect example of a cheap clone RPG trying to break into the genre. The first thing I would pay attention to is when looking through pictures in the App Store: if most of the images are covered in text - that's a solid indicator that the gameplay isn't up to par. Next, when your basic four classes don't include any backstory, you should automatically know that there's no way this game is going to draw you in.

Aside from the action and average leveling system, I find Lord of War: Royal Melee at the bottom of my 2PlayList.
