The Future of MapleStory 2: Becoming the Ultimate Form of a Casual MMORPG

$

0
MapleStory 2, like most other MMORPGs, features open world exploration, quests, character customization and progression, boss raid, and social content. However, the game is really a social MMO at its core by focusing on cute, diversified customizations, various mini-games, and the systems allow players to show off themselves. But this is not the final form of MapleStory 2, and in fact it has bigger ambition, which is becoming a game where player can create their own casual content and custom dungeons.

Game Producer Kim Jin-man

"We can make custom dungeons now but we still have balance issues. If someone creates a custom dungeon with too better rewards, it will have negative impact on other content. We won't release this feature until we find a solution. Now our plan is to release siege content first," Producer Kim Jin-man told us. Besides, it's very likely that the game will get custom casual content first, and then custom dungeons.

Currently you can build and decorate your house, fish, plant things, and play dozens of mini-games in the game. "Casual content can be very fun, and it can become boring really fast," Kim said. "My philosophy is not asking players to play mini-games for 4 or 5 hours. I want to combine the gameplay content with story, and then go further and deeper with the casual content." For instance, sometimes parkour, finshing and instrument playing aren't independent mini-games but part of the main story.

"We have different ideas than most MMORPGs. The main story doesn't stress on the role-playing aspect. Once the game did look like a MMORPG but it wasn't what we wanted to do," he told us.

"In the future the main storyline will be presented in chapters. All main stories will be told through dungeons. Players will uncover the bad guy behind all this things step by step, and invade his town in the future."

In the adventure to find out who's the bad guy, players might come across a large secret tunnel where parkour content will be presented. Or they could enter a maze where other casual contents are available.

I personally like the ideas of how Nexon wants to make MapleStory 2 a unique casual MMORPG. The game might be coming to the western market, according to Nexon America's job post.

[Exclusive] Ship of Heroes: Dev Q&A - The Settings and Lore Edition

$
0
0

I discussed AI, powers, day jobs and character generation in my previous article, but that was only half of the conversation I had with Casey McGeever, CEO of Heroic Games and Matthew Wilson, lead developer of the upcoming Ship of Heroes. What I learned of the setting and lore reminded me at times of sci fi classics like Ender's Game, Heinlein's Orphans of the Sky and Aldiss' Non-Stop; although rather than the erosion of society and knowledge that they portray, Ship of Heroes depicts a bright future that is worth fighting for. Ship of Heroes will bring us a fascinating combination of superheroes and generation ships that I can't wait to see. Sadly I don't have any cool video clips to share this time, so without furtho ado, I'll just jump right into the setting...

Welcome to the Heroship FHS Justice. A nation in flight, the Justice is one of many heroships launched from earth 2 centuries prior to the game's current time of 2487 AD with the mission to explore and advance human civilization. Human society has changed a great deal over the centuries; a series of massive invasions unified people as never before, and the acquisition of Unobtanium from the rubble of defeated alien spacecraft has lead to unprecidented scientific breakthroughs as well as an increase in the number of humans with special powers - the superhero.

If you've visited the Ship of Heroes website, you're probably already familiar with the sight of these two iconic statues pictured at the beginning of this piece, battling in front of the blue-domed City Hall. Called the Hill of the Beginning, this statuesque pair represents the grand battle between the last two superheroes who felt the need to hide their identities. Currently admired and revered by the population along the lines of our modern admiration of famous athletes, superheroes on the FHS Justice have no need to hide who they are. The number of superheroes compared to normal people on board the FHS Justice is between half and a full percent of the population and they can freely move between their superhero duties and their non-heroic lives.

"They're accepted, they're cherished, they're admired. But they also step up. They're not vigilantes. People accept them, and part of the reason is they provide the extra defense, the extra muscle that's needed in a galaxy that has enemies in it. The reason the heroships are not destroyed is because each of them has these super heroes in it; and these heroes are critical to the survival of society."

Why a city in a spaceship? Apotheosis City was the first level of the FHS Justice that was built, and it was designed to remind the generations of humans who would make it their home of their homeland - Earth. There are rolling parks, a waterway, and many of the buildings were specifically designed to call already existing landmarks to mind - it was built to be a memory of home. The sky that can be seen is nothing more than a projection, designed to imitate the earth's sky. The cycling of day and night, blue afternoons and starlit skies are all images upon the ceiling of this gigantic level where the bulk of the ship's humans live.

The size and scope of the Free Human Ship (FHS) Justice is a total of 20 levels, each with a sublevel, plus a level each for the helm and engineering. It is 20.4 miles long and powered by engines using Unobtainium as fuel. Each module has a diameter of 1.25 miles, a height of 0.78 miles, and the aboveground size of Apotheosis City measures 1.2 square miles. As the name suggests, the Justice is an independent human state in space and encounters other human ships, alien vessels, and worlds during its travels.

Not all of these levels are habitable by humans, as some are hazard zones that have been completely overrun with invasive alien species, and much of the ship will not be built at launch. Casey's goal is to launch the game as a nucleus that will be expanded upon with the addition of new powersets, costume pieces and maps. Gamers find it more exciting to have updates that contain new areas and things rather than bug fixes after all, so the Ship of Heroes team is intent on building a smaller, more solid series of maps that will grow over time. Quality over quantity. I have to say I like this approach a lot more than what usually happens in games; the creation of many areas and zones in the name of providing a huge world size number, that end up being dead zones, completely devoid of players as they (or should I say we?) congregate into a handful of popular areas.

This is one of my favorite views of the city. Taken slightly above Heroic Plaza, with the city hall behind and a little below me, you can see the chromed duelists, the Archway at the end of the street, and an excellent shot of one of the ways the dev team is thinking of player fun as they design the levels. The buildings have lots of ledges and perches for flying heroes to land on, and there are open areas like this one for super speeders to zoom through. "We are hoping to open with flight, superspeed, and teleport. And additionally, what we'd like to see is the ability to manifest flight in more than one way," explained Casey. You weren't blessed with a natural ability to fly? Jetpacks! Get your jetpacks here!

Also in this area you'll find the auction house, named Ivar and Sons and the ship's security building.

But why was I reminded of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, a setting without generation ships?

Here we have the embassy building. It is the equivilent to the United Nations, where friendly alien species have their resident ambassadors, and players will find it to be a central quest location. It is one of the places Casey pointed out as marked for definite expansions after game launch. I personally love working on player factions, so I expect that I'll be spending a lot of time there ... here's to hoping we'll get ambassadorial day jobs! Humanity has encountered a great number of alien species as they have explored out into the vast reaches of space, some can even interbreed with humans, and many of them are interested in building mutually beneficial relationships.

Many - but not all. City of Heroes had the Rikti. Ender's Game had the buggers. Ship of Heroes has the Nagdelians.

A saurian race, the Nagdelians are a highly regimented society with a cast system that is grounded in genetics. They appear in soldier, lieutenant, captain and mage form, each with a specific look and set of physical characteristics. Generally speaking, the higher the rank of the Nagdelian, the larger and more physically powerful it is.

"They see themselves as the only true species. They have a much lower level of individuality, their clans and their species seem to them to be the sum total of who they are. It's a completely different world view.. They see the universe as space they control and space they don't control yet."

Why are heroes revered, cherished, and able to go about their daily lives without the need to hide their identity? The answer is the Nagdelians. Aggressive, friendless, and considerably more individually powerful, the superheroes are all that stand between the Nagdelians and the conquest of humanity as a whole. Their world view is so fundamentally different that there can be no reasoning with them. They stage routine raids in search of Unobtanium, raids the players must overcome to protect their home.

The Heroes Arch is in the center of Apotheosis City, and serves as a central hub for players. Surrounded by University grounds, with Science Park to the west and a park that will be named during the kickstarter to the east, it is not merely a monument. It functions as a refinery and mint as well. Two thirds of it are belowground, and it collects the free floating and inert remains of Unobtanium that are the byproducts of the ship's engines to produce the ship's currency that is simply called Dust. It therefor stands as a beacon for Nagdelian attacks, and will be a central raid location.

Will it be the next Atlas Park? I hope we can look forward to many costume contests and social gatherings beneath the Arch!

I will close out with a final quote, that ought to make many players excited:

"We have not yet named the building between the Ship Security and the City Hall, but we do plan to enable player designed missions to take place there."

Visit the official page!

And mark your calenders, because the kickstarter is coming!

Fire Emblem Heroes Review: Conflicted Opinions for Nintendo's F2P Title

$
0
0
After Pokémon and Super Mario, it is a somewhat less popular license that Nintendo launched into the mobile market this month. Indeed, Fire Emblem is aimed at a niche audience, a license that is certainly growing since the 3DS episodes, but much less popular than the mustache'd plumber or the electric mouse. Does Fire Emblem Heroes succeed in convincing in a genre where competition prevails?

In the vicious world of free-to-play, the "Gacha" games have become a genre in their own right, with precise mechanics that are almost mandatory. As a reminder, the principle revolves around a system of luck where one draws characters to use them in combat, the strongest ones often being the rarest. Obviously, the resource that allows these draws is only available in small quantities, which can push the players to go through the cash shop. A terribly addictive principle that has made the days of titles like DBZ Dokkan Battle, KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained χ or Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.

So it is no surprise that it is the same system that governs Fire Emblem Heroes, system that orbits around virtual currency. If five orbs are enough to make an invocation, it is more profitable to use them in packs of twenty thanks to a group discount, allowing you to make five summons and thus save five orbs. Obviously, the characters to be invoked are the heroes (and pseudo-villains) of the Tactical-RPG series and so we find Lyn, Marth, Lucina, Tiki and many more with nearly 100 characters at launch and, it is assured, many regular additions.

Fire Emblem Lightweight

The usual background of Fire Emblem games is also found in the scenario, although, let's be clear, do not expect a great narrative art. The Kingdom of Askr once worked with the Emblian Empire to open and close the gates to other worlds. The former could only open gates, while the latter could only close them. At some point, however, the Emblians left the gates open for their own ambitions. The Askran royalty, unable to close them, formed the Order of Heroes to stop the destruction of their kingdom. The player is then brought into this conflict by the Kingdom of Askr as a tactician, but also as the only being able to summon heroes from other worlds. On the other hand, the Emblian Empire is having heroes from the opened gates fight for them (either through force or deception) with contracts that can only be broken upon their defeat. The dialogues as well as the reasons for the battles can be rather simplistic, with examples such as "prove your worth", "let's have fun fighting to death", and sometimes ending with lines like "I just misunderstood you". We've seen better ways to stage fights, but that's not the most important thing. One somewhat surprising twist was the fact that a particular "hero" decided to remain with the Emblian Empire despite the contract being broken.

In its structure, the title is divided into chapters themselves divided into various acts which each correspond to a confrontation. Each attempt uses up a certain amount of Energy that you automatically regain at the rate of one point per five minutes. Great classic again. While it isn't felt early on, the limitations are gradually more obvious as you advance through chapters. Players are indeed limited to a total of 50 Energy, and at some point, these become barely enough to have 3 fights. Once the Energy is all used up, you are left having to wait for up to 4 hours for it to refill. And unsurprisingly for this kind of game, the energy can be refilled instantly through the use of items or a swipe of your credit card if you have none left.

Casual Tactics

Let us now turn to the main attraction of Fire Emblem, its gameplay, an element that has undergone changes in this mobile version. For starters, the fighting is done on screens of 6x8 tiles, which for the regulars of the series might seem tiny. And let's be clear, it is. With a team limited to four allies fighting against as many (or sometimes more) enemies, the tactical possibilities are few. Movements are also restricted to one tile for armored units, two tiles for infantry and flying units, and three tiles for cavalry units. If you've played a Fire Emblem game before, you'll know that some of the combat are somewhat based on a rock-paper-scissor system that corresponds to the weapons of the protagonists, with swords beating axes, axes beating lances and lances beating swords. Mages, archers and beasts (as well as kunai/shuriken users for the most recent episodes) are normally neutral, while healers can only heal. Thankfully, this concept remained in Fire Emblem Heroes, albeit with certain changes. Archers and beasts remain neutral, as well as healers who can now both heal and attack. The others are assigned colors, with sword users being assigned the color Red, axes getting Green while lances get Blue. The biggest change here is that mages can be part of either of these three colors, gaining the advantages/disadvantage of the main weapons. For example, while a red mage will have an advantage in battle against a green mage, it will most likely lose to a blue mage. Another feature taken from the main games is the fact that some of the weapons have an advantage over certain unit types. For example, Cherche uses a Hammer that gives her an advantage over armored units, while Marth's Falchion gives him an advantage over dragons.

Thus, on each trip, there are a whole bunch of calculations to take into account. How many enemies can reach you, how much HP can you afford to lose, how many enemies can you kill without putting yourself at risk, and so on. The advantage is that you can calculate everything in advance since there is no random element at this level. Damage is calculated using a simple formula: ATK * (Advantage / Disadvantage) - DEF/MDEF. Some will probably rejoice over the fact that the Luck stat is not present here. In fact, any notion of critical hits or precision rates is absent from Fire Emblem Heroes. A new step towards simplicity that will undoubtedly allow access to a wider audience. The notion of chance is also removed from the special skills or characters. Sol, for example, no longer depends on the RNG aspect, but will automatically activate after 4 actions (whether the character attacks or gets attacked).

In the end, we end up with an accessible gameplay, which still requires a bit of reflection, especially in the Arena (PvP mode). To unlock the passive and active skills of your heroes, you have to use their AP, which the earn at each level up or by killing enemies. While useful in principle, and even if in practice, one should not expect a tree of very advanced options, your choices for character being very limited. Since you can not change weapons at will (your characters are definitely linked to their color code in the stone-paper-scissors system), let's just say that the customization aspect is to be thrown into oblivion.

Monotoneous End-Game

Another point, each character is rather mono-task, which can be seen as a disadvantage or a defect: the good point is that you can not do all the game with a single team and that it is better to count on a panel of varied fighters to always have four characters suitable for your next mission. The catch is that the leveling system is so boring that getting several different characters to level 40 turns out to be a chore. In combat, a character will only gain decent experience if it kills an opponent of a higher or almost equivalent level. As soon as you are a level above your opponents, the experience gain becomes negligible. So, in addition to having good characters, you need to have several characters for each category AND for each level of levels if you want to be effective. Incidentally, if you use a hero for his support abilities (boosting an allie's attack, for example), no exp is earned. To solve the problem, Intelligent System designed a system of gems that to boost the characters of our choice, but for now they are too limited to solve the problem. To make matters worse, if a characters dies on a map, all the experience earned since the specific battle started will be lost. Expect to regularly go through the training phases, which unfortunately spend a lot of energy for a fairly inconclusive and surly result.

As for increasing the number of units in your army, to summon a hero, you need to spend 5 Orbs. The Orbs are earned by playing through the story, by connecting regularly, participating in events, or by completing certain missions. And of course, orbs can also be bought with a swipe of your credit card. That being said, Orbs are pretty easy to get at the beginning of the game (but much harder later on) since when you finish the tutorial of Fire Emblem Heroes, you will have as much as 15 free Orbs on hand. It is strongly recommended, however, that you do not summon heroes immediately. Check our guide to know why.

So while the element of chance was removed from the gameplay aspect of the game, the summoning part will greatly depend of the amount of luck your personally have. Some players used up all their free orbs from the game without getting a single 5 star hero, while others are boasting dozens of them. A pure Gacha system meant to push players to spend money in the game.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Fire Emblem Heroes,  remains a small disappointment when we know the potential of the saga. If one understands the desire of Nintendo to open up to a wide audience on mobile, it seems just that the title of Intelligent System was not the right candidate in terms of gameplay. However, it remains playable and some confrontations are balanced, despite the fact that the reflection aspect is reduced whereas the fear and the suspense are for their part absent subscribers.

God Eater Online Hands-On: Amazing Japanese Action Mobile RPG [Download Link]

Hey Guys, the latest and most entertaining game in the MMORPG category is God Eater Online. The game was released 21st February 2017 and is set to meet the rising standards in the competitive gaming industry and it also has the potential to be amongst the top in the particular genre. This article will provide an in-depth review of the game along with all the pros and cons. In addition to this, a download file has been attached so that you don’t have to struggle finding the game as it is still hasn’t been launched globally.  Have a quick look at the gameplay trailer to see what’s in store.

STORYLINE

The story is set out in the futuristic year of 2050 where living organisms called “Oracle cells” that are entirely different from the composition of traditional organisms were discovered in the Nordic Region. After an explosive occurrence and breeding, the oracle cells started evolving rapidly while catching and consuming every single object on planet earth. They diversified and different violent life forms were created. Eventually, this threat which was posed by the oracle cells were known as “Aragami”
The existing weapons were ineffective against the Aragami and humans gradually started losing their habitat to the Aragami. At this point in time, a biological company called as “Fenrir” developed a biological weapon known as “God machine” that embedded an Oracle Cell and special troops known as God eater.
With the development of God eaters, after 20 years of the Aragami presence, the fight between the two is set at the Himalayas.*

CHARACTERS.

God Eater Online basically features four primary characters. They are named as
1) Maria
2) Gadot
3) Leila
4) Lu.
All of these are the God eaters who are the only ones with the power to defeat the aragami. The characters are what form the basis of this game. Each of these characters assist the main character. The best part about the game is the weapons which each person wields.

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION.

Even though character customization is not given a lot of weightage in the game, players can edit their characters before the game kicks off. The various options included in the game with respect to character customization include; choosing the sex of the character, selecting the complexion, hair styles etc.

GRAPHICS

The graphics in this game are simply stunning. It gives you the feel of playing a game which is usually played on gaming consoles. God Eater online features a 3D gameplay with brilliant gaming environments. The game is essentially played from a third person view and this makes it all the more interesting.

Coming to the gaming environments, the developers have kept an eye for detail and have ensure that the storyline of the game blends in with the environments. This is seen in each level clearly as the background environment gives the *looks of feels of a ruined country taken over by monsters. Every minute detail has been given attention to, this is seen with respect to the blood, the way the character tries to keep his balance after being hit etc.  Hats off to the developers for making a game with such beautiful graphics.

TUTORIAL.

God Eater Online has a designated Arena for tutorial. This arena will teach you the very basics of the game such as attacking, jumping and running. In addition to this, the tutorial helps you to learn how to consume the arigami oracle cells. This is a very important feature which needs to be learnt as this will help you learn special skills and arigami attacks later in the game.

However, these are the only things which the game teaches you in the game. All the other relevant information and tips are given in the form of tips when the game is loading. This can be quite difficult as the game is not yet officially released in English.

CONTROLS

Mastering the controls on this game will take quite some time. The game features a standard floatable movement control on the left side of the screen and basic attacking and defensive keys on the right. However, the simplicity ends here. The game does not have a camera lock on feature which stays at the back of the character throughout the game giving players a good and clear picture of their environment and what is around them. On the contrary, the camera has to be adjusted manually by the players according to the perspective that they want. The players can easily do this by swiping their finger on the right hand side of the screen above the attack controls. This becomes extremely difficult while playing the game as the camera keeps moving and changing perspective, this in fact prevents the players from having a quick and smooth attack.

MULTIPLAYER GAMING

Online gaming in God Eater online thoroughly enjoyable. The game can have upto 100 players set up in one arena to fight monsters. In addition to this if the players choose to play the feature quests called “Order” then they can team up with upto four members at a time to take on monsters. ‘Order quests’ require 4 members to fight the aragami.

PLAYING THE GAME.

The game is quite simple to play. Players will have to defeat the arigami and consume their oracle cells in order to move further. The game features the traditional ‘God Arc’ weapons which are a thrill to play with. The weapon that you wield will serve for multiple purposes. This means that the same weapon can be used as a short range combat and long range combat weapon (players can use swords and blade for short range whereas the same can be converted into a canon etc. for long range).  The game also features an ‘Abyss factor’ which will be learned by the character as his level increases, this allows the players to consume the aragami and cast out powerful attacks.

There are several game modes which have been made available in God eater Online;
1) STORY: The players move further in accordance with the storyline.
2) ORDER: Team with four players to fight arigami.
3) MMO FIELD: Up to 100 players in one arena.

At GDC 2017, Oculus provides a demo for Blade & Soul VR dubbed Blade & Soul: Table Arena at their booth. The B&S VR game is developed and published by NCsoft but release date and release platform are to be announced.

We got the gameplay footage here and it shows the game is like Clash Royale where you deploy units to take down your opponent's base.

The demo also includes chest opening. You can see the images below.

[Exclusive] Ship of Heroes: Sneak Peak at Combat

I've told you a bit about the gameplay of upcoming superhero game Ship of Heroes, and about the lore. Now it's finally time to look at some actual gameplay. And it's even a fire blaster! By far my favorite combat powerset in the much beloved City of Heroes, this demo even displays a version of one of my favorite of favorites: Rain of Fire.

"The combat takes place in the game’s playable space in Apotheosis City, the same one shown in all of the other videos, not in a test environment, or a gray-box, or a purchased level. All the combat and use of powers is custom and it's a signature Hero is fighting signature enemies, each with a wide array of powers."

After watching this, I reached out to Heroic Games, and learned a few more tidbits of interest. Meltdown is being played by an actual dev. If you recall my discussion of the AI in my first Q&A, the game is actually challenging, even for the devs, as the enemy AI responds. I was informed that it took several tries for this combat to be won. That was very exciting to hear! Will we be seeing thoughtful, tactical combat again?

Here is what I was directly told about the video:
  • The fight takes place between Ship of Heroes signature NPC hero named Meltdown and a group of signature enemies, the Nagdelians, who are raiding the FHS Justice, the heroship that is the setting for Ship of Heroes.
  •  Meltdown utilizes six different powers in the video – four attacks and two self-buffs.  The attacks are a ranged location AOE, a ranged targeted AOE, a single target attack, and a short range cone attack.  Meltdown is able to buff his damage and later his health regeneration (useful in boss fights).
  • The Nagdelian raiders are initially represented by one lieutenant and three soldiers with five powers.  The soldiers and lieutenant each demonstrate two ranged attacks with different damage levels, and the lieutenant additionally has a slow recharge power to call for reinforcements.
  • The timing and pacing of the fight is interesting.  Meltdown defeats seven enemies in a fight lasting about 90 seconds, and he takes significant damage.
  • The appearance of the main character results from the character creator used in Ship of Heroes.
  • The AI for civilians and for enemies must actually be able to challenge a player.  Civilians should run, and enemies should utilize multiple attacks, change position to bring strong attacks into play, call for reinforcements or heal team members.  That shows good progress in AI development.
  • The game UI and targeting system work and look the way they will in the released game.
  • The game UI is now fully functional.
  • Everything shown is potentially subject to change before launch, but there is a lot of capability being illustrated in this video and it is all building quickly toward the Alpha.

Specific powers that I saw in the video include Rain of Fire with is the ranged location targeted AoE that reminded me quite a bit of the City of Heroes power of the same name. Fireball, which appeared to be a hard hitting single target ranged attack, and Plasma Bolt which looked to my eyes like a ranged targeted AoE . At 1:31 Meltdown moves in for what looks like the short range cone attack that has no cast time and thus isn't named in this action sequence, and a few seconds later at 1:42 he uses what seems to be the mentioned health buff as his health regeneration increases noticeably after that point.

Like Meltdown, the civilian NPCs were created using the character creator. For the curious, you can watch one of the partying civilians at the end being created in the character creation video that was released in January.

One of my favorite moments was right in the beginning, when Meltdown took out a Nagdelian with his opening shot, and the camera zoomed in to show the others looking at him as he (it?) fell. For being as early in the development cycle as this is, it's an amazing demonstration! Thus far Heroic Games has been proving it can meet its aggressive development schedule.

Have you heard of Katsucon? In case you haven't, Katsucon is an annual 3-day fan convention held in the D.C. metro area for multicultural enthusiasts and entertainment. The purpose of this fan convention is to bring information about the Japanese animation, society, and traditional and popular culture to fans everywhere.

At this year‘s edition, a collection of Overwatch cosplayers wearing draw a lot of attention. A group known as Underwatch, labeled as the "brainchild" of Stella Chuu, a famous cosplay from New York, came up with an entire collection of fancy underpants for every Overwatch hero. A NSFW gallery will show you another face of the Overwatch characters that you know. The Underwatch presentation which started in the public area ended up in a suite at MGM Grand, after the convention staff were asked to disperse and cover up since they were violating the dress code rules. Stella Chuu said: "This ended being the most successful shoot I’ve ever produced."
