Blizzard has announced Journey to Un’Goro, the next expansion for Hearthstone, will arrive in early April. The dinosaur-themed expansion introduces some new mechanics, a new minion type and of course, 135 new cards.

The new Adapt system allows a minion to be infused with elemental power, getting new properties. You will be presented with three options when you play a card with Adapt. There are totally 10 Adaptations to choose from, so you’ll have plenty of options to respond to the card played by your opponent.
The other new mechanic added to the game is Quests. Quest cards are an exciting new card type coming to Hearthstone and they are Legendary card. You can only have one in your deck, and it’ll always appear in your opening hand. Each Quest will have prerequisites listed on it — should you complete them, you’ll be granted incredible rewards! Quests show up on your Hero Portrait once you play them.
You can learn more about Journey to Un’Goro expansion on the Hearthstone official site.

Funcom surprisingly revealed in the Q4 2016 financial report that they will be relaunching The Secret World in the first half of 2017. The developer explained that the purpose to relaunch the 2012 MMORPG is to broaden the appeal of the game.

So, what Funcom is going to do the following:
  • Redesigned new player experience
  • Major improvements to gameplay including combat
  • Introduction of new retention systems such as daily rewards
  • Adjustments to the business model, including free access to the story content
The relaunch activities will begin in late March, according to Funcom.

Now that the surprise was delivered, lets move to numbers. The studio mentioned Conan Exiles had sold 487,000 units in its first month of early access. However, the game wasn't a main source of the company's Q4 2016 revenue and perhaps it will surprise us in the Q1 2017 financial report.

Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade Goes Free-to-Play; But You May Not Like It

Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade will be going free-to-play, with restrictions to gameplay content. The F2P version will only allow you to play the Orcs faction, and your progression speed will be 3 times slower than those who have purchased the $50 game pack and 2 times slower than players who own the $20 game pack. So basically, the free version is supposed to let you try and experience the basics of the game.

Details of the F2P version:
-  free accounts are limited in relation to the progress of the character. And they will not be able to play for the classes using the jump pack.
- To gain full access to the game it is necessary to acquire 20,000 RTC (or buy one of the game packs).
- People who in the past have already bought the game will receive a gift from the developers. And it will transmit your friend or just to sell (as it will be subject Steam'ovsky).
- We should expect a "soft launch" of free access. To be precise, the first such access will get people to subscribe to the newsletter on the official website and get the key players through various portals and more.
- Free accounts do not get through the campaign RTC (and experience to give Requisition points less), but if you improve to a full account, then you will be given all the RTC, and not only that you have earned during your Free Adventure.

MMO Hut did an interview with the dev regarding the F2P transition. You can learn more here

ARK: Survival Evolved to Reward the Modding Community $4000 Each Month

ARK: Survival Evolved modders will have a chance to receive a total of $4000 monthly price reward from the developer Studio Wildcard.

Jeremy Stieglitz, the lead designer and lead programmer of ARK Survival Evolved, explained how the payment program will work.

Each month 15 selected modders will be rewarded and paid a total amount of $4,000 USD. The developer will evaluate these modders and determine whether to continue to pay them next month. According to Stieglitz, there is the possibility to let more modders to win the reward each month in the future.

Many mods developers put their spare time into the mod, which is often difficult to realize besides a profession or study. The studio Wildcard would like to give these developers the opportunity to do the modding and let more time flow into the development. The studio hopes that the mods will be finally completed and the community will be available as a complete product.

The reward system is facing a few difficulties. Models, skins, textures or codes are borrowed from each other. Sometimes this causes conflicts in the Modder community. Just recently there was the case of two ARK modders, both working on a Pokémon mod. The dinosaurs were replaced by Pokemon.

The studio expects the modders to take up conflicts of this kind in their own hands and clarify them. Once a modder joins the program, Studio Wildcard grants them the right to work. If disputes arise about copyright infringement, it is left to the modder how he handles it.

Anyone who participates in the program as a modder is required to transfer his sources to the Wildcard team. Games like ARK Survival Evolved often receives patches and updates that can make a mod unusable. To keep the sponsored Mods alive, Wildcard sees this security network as necessary. The developers of ARK would only do this if the modder itself would not be able to perform the update on the mod itself.

NetEase Games On How to Create High Quality Games and Win the Market

NetEase Games held its first ever developers forum in the West, titled "Insight of Fun", in San Francisco on February 28. Living up to the company's motto of "good games have no borders", lead developers of NetEase's 5 flagship games shared development concepts and behind-the-scene stories with an audience of gamers, industry peers, and reporters. The successful event was a direct reflection of the popularity and traction that NetEase Games has in overseas markets.

Ethan Wang

"Quality games have no borders. At NetEase, it is our sincere hope to create more high quality and innovative products for gamers around the world," said Ethan Wang, the Vice President of NetEase, Inc.

"Having deep cultural heritage, paying attention to game security, and keeping up with hot topics bring us success"

Fantasy Westward Journey is the most successful IP NetEase Games ever created in the past 10 years. The secret, according to the game producer Chen Junxiong, is 3 things: having deep cultural heritage, paying attention to game security, and keeping up with hot topics. "They refer to game universe, player experience, and marketing, the holy trinity that makes Fantasy Westward Journey the NO.1 Chinese MMO." NetEase Games understands that the key to keep an IP alive is to make sure it remains active. That's why Fantasy Westward Journey mobile game has released 17 major updates since launched in 2015. NetEase Games then introduced in a series of products inspired by the IP including a brand theme song, a documentary, and a Fantasy Westward Journey carnival.

"Mobile games is bringing people closer to arts, culture and emotion"

Jin Tao, Producer of 2016 blockbuster Onmyoji, said that mobile games were not only connecting people with each other in a fun way, but also creating new and deeper connections between players and arts, culture and emotion. The game has gone beyond game in China, it's a culture, according to Jin Tao. "To create an authentic Heian period’s Onmyoji world, our product development team went to Japan many times to do field research, voice recording and seeking for inspirations," he explained. "We did our utmost to create an intricate world of audios, visuals, characters and stories for an engrossing gaming experience. We believe that once players relate to the game itself they are more inclined to interact with other players," he added.

"Combine navigation cues with triggered story events so that players don’t miss key points of the game narrative"

Twilight Pioneers is one of the launch titles for Daydream VR and the game was featured by Google in the collection 'Get in the game'. Game Producer Yu Kai shared 3 stories during the development of the game, talking about how his team addressed motion sickness, combat skill designed for Daydream Controllers, and game narrative in VR. He believed that first, the more work the developer put into combating motion sickness, the less likely players would suffer from it. Second, developers should be aware of the practical scenarios in which mobile VR games are likely to be played. And finally, combine navigation cues with triggered story events so that players don't miss key points of the game narrative.

"Our goal is to make a mobile game that can be enjoyed by everyone who has watched the film"— Liu Xi, Producer of Kung Fu Panda 3

Kung Fu Panda 3 was once a very different game in its early development stage, according to Liu Xi. "There were many card games in Chinese mobile game market so we wanted to make one as well," he said. "We designed 6 chapters of gameplay content included stories and combat. We also created the companion system which was based on card collecting elements." It didn't work well in the test, for the card game genre was declining in China, and the game's combat system was very boring compared with other ARPGs. The team decided to go to a different direction and make a game that was closely connected to the film. "We picked out all classic scenarios in the film and see if it fit in the game one by one. Then we remade the first 6 chapters and added in more stories and elements from the film," Liu Xi said.

Attendees also got a preview of NetEase Games' global product plan. "This Spring, we will be launching a deep and immersive 3D-action MMORPG," said Riten Huang, General Manager of NetEase Games. "Following that, we are excited to bring the popular game, Onmyoji, to audiences in the West. Later in 2017, we also plan to launch a strategy and exploration MMO game created by an international team of developers, including top industry talent from China, the United States, Germany and South Korea."

Robust financial and operational performance in China forms a solid foundation for NetEase’s overseas expansion. In 2016, revenues of NetEase’s online gaming segment reached $4 billion, up 61.6% year over year. NetEase Games continues to maintain high growth rate and deliver new hit games. After consolidating its market leadership in China, NetEase Games is looking to expand further overseas. When discussing the overseas strategy for NetEase Games, NetEase CEO Ding Lei mentioned that he has ambitious goals to achieve greater results in the non-Chinese gaming markets within the next three to five years.

Oculus Rift May Have Lost Its Competitive Edge

Officially launched in March 2016, Oculus Rift, the harbinger in VR gaming headset, will celebrate at the end of this month its first anniversary. However, Oculus appears to have lost its edge in the past few months. In February 2017, they lost the lawsuit and had to pay $500 million to Zenimax as a result. It's not sure whether the lawsuit affects Oculus' sales, but they just announced to lower the price of both Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch controller by $100 (Oculus Rift is now priced at $499, and the Touch controller is now $99).

Meanwhile, Sony, another major player in the VR market announced 915,000 PlayStation VR headsets had been sold by now. It's believed by some analysts that PlayStation VR may have been outselling Oculus Rift by as much as 3:1. Let's not forget HTC, which joined the VR headset war in April 2016 with HTC Vive. The Taiwanese company hasn't yet revealed its sales figures.

CCS Insight, a research group, estimates that 11 million virtual and augmented reality devices were sold in 2016, but only 1.2 million were dedicated VR devices for games. If the number is accurate, it's not hard to estimate how much units were sold by Oculus and HTC. Based on these numbers we can assume that the VR market hasn't grown as fast as the VR developers were expecting.

Fantasy Westward Journey Mobile: Revamping Classic IP & Building Social Features

At GDC 2017 NetEase Games hold a developer conference where lead developers of 5 of its flagship titles shared their experience and insights of making games. Released in 2015, Fantasy Westward Journey Mobile is one of the most successful games ever released in China. The game's Producer Chen Junxiong has been working in the Fantasy Westward Journey team since 2005, and he shared with the western audiences his experience of building an IP with a total of 310 million players in the past 11 years.

Fantasy Westward Journey first came out as a PC MMO in 2003 and remained the most popular game IP in China for over a decade. Chen explained the success of Fantasy Westward Journey IP was achieved by having cultural heritage, paying attention to game security and keeping up with popular game topics, which refer to game universe, player experience, and marketing respectively. "Those are the holy trinity that makes Fantasy Westward Journey the NO.1 Chinese MMO," he said. "NetEase Games understands that the key to keep an IP alive is to make sure it remains active. That's why Fantasy Westward Journey mobile game has released 17 major updates since launched in 2015. NetEase Games then introduced in a series of products inspired by the IP including a brand theme song, a documentary, and a Fantasy Westward Journey carnival," he continued.

When he was asked to develop Fantasy Westward Journey mobile game in 2013, he wanted to rebuild the IP and introduced in new elements. "The mobile version can't really take too much from the PC version but it has to be recognized by Fantasy Westward Journey PC players while attract new players in visuals and gameplay content," he said.

"I bet there was no mobile game in 2013 that actually connects players together with social system. The socialization between players at that time was nothing more than comparing scores or gifting energy to friends. Those were not real socialization."

"We saw the opportunity and we were lucky to have enough time to build a system in Fantasy Westward Journey mobile game that simulated real world socialization," Chen stated. "In the game players can trade with each other, team up with each other, and join different social circles. From then on, the game's evolvement was based on socialization."

Based off Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the team categorized players' need to 3 types: "survival", "enjoyment", and "growth", which guided the development of many new gameplay contents. "The 3 types of needs make up a triangle. Players with different purposes can find their social circle in the game and meet new friends that share the same values. This is what makes Fantasy Westward Journey mobile game's social system fun."

"With social system, we have built a society in Westward Journey mobile game that has millions of players. We also understand that it's a great challenge to maintain it and keep it healthy, so we need a clear and long-term plan. For now our designing philosophy is strictly balancing the virtual currency and stabilizing the economy system to make sure players' virtual fortune doesn't lose its value. A living economy system means more possibilities in gaming. Trading system allows normal players get profits from the activities of hardcore and paying players."

"Here's an example. Many players like digging high level treasure maps in the game and their activity may cause rare pets spawn in a random map. Normal players can capture the pet and trade it for in-game currency." In Fantasy Westward Journey, free players and paying players are relying on each other and beneficial from each other.

Onmyoji: Creating Connection Between Players and Arts, Culture and Emotion

Onmyoji is a phenomenal mobile game in Chinese market in 2016 with over 10 million daily active players. The game's Producer Jin Tao shared his opinions of how to win the market at Insight of Fun Talkshop at GDC 2017.

Jin thinks that the advancement of mobile games is bringing people closer to arts, culture and emotion. "What we have seen in recent years is that on the one hand game innovation is slowing down in terms of coming up with new types, but content development is deepening on the other. With the ubiquity of smartphones, mobile games are not only connecting people with each other in a fun way, mobile games are also creating new and deeper connections between players and arts, culture and emotion," he told at his speech.

Through Onmyoji, the developer team may have created the largest fan-based mobile game ecosystem in China. The extent of fan based activities are far and wide including fan based literature, illustration, cosplay, dancing, and singing, etc. "At the beginning, we worked with influencers in those different fields and were trying to motivate players to produce UGC  through sharing  high quality art works. We soon discovered that the talent and creativity of our players far beyond our expectation. They have created a whole new dimension of contents," he explained.

Even the team itself was surprised by the power and passion of the community and what it had created. The game's high quality ensured that could happen. "To create an authentic Heian period’s Onmyoji world, our product development team went to Japan many times to do field research, voice recording and seeking for inspirations," Jin shared some details of how they developed and polished the game. "We did our utmost to create an intricate world of audios, visuals, characters and stories for an engrossing gaming experience. We believe that once players relate to the game itself they are more inclined to interact with other players."

He believed that in the future, more developers will focus not only on making the games themselves, but also on how they can shape and cultivate a multi-dimensional ecosystem built on arts, culture and emotion.

Kung Fu Panda 3: A Mobile Action Game Closely Connects to the Film

Kung Fu Panda 3 mobile game released in January 2016 in China and then in South Korea. The game will be released in more Asian markets in 2017 and hopefully someday it will be released in the west as well. At NetEase Games Insight of Fun conference during GDC 2017, the game's Producer Liu Xi shared the experience of making a game that's appeal to both mobile gamers and fans of the film.

Liu Xi said Kung Fu Panda is a popular Hollywood movie and movie has a bigger audience base than game has. "We hoped the game can be enjoyed by movie fans, so we have to make sure the ARPG more accessible and easier to play for common people. So we ditched virtual joystick at the very beginning and used the tapping control. Players only have to control their character's move, dodge, attack direction, and skills. We did bring back virtual joystick later based on some players' feedback. However, the control system is built on tapping control."

The team created a demo in 2 months and they felt satisfied with the combat and kicked off the development at full throttle. "Back in 2015 the mobile game market was occupied by all kinds of card games and we wanted to make a card game as well. We applied the same combat in various different scenes and created 6 chapters," he recalled the days how the team made the gamneplay content in a short time. "Then we put a pet (card) collecting system into the game to allow players to gain additional skills and stats. However, it was proven disappointed as the card game genre was declining when the game started test phase, and on the other hand the combat system was too simple to compete other ARPGs. We started to think what we did wrong."

"We noticed that except the characters, the game didn't have any content that's related to the Kung Fu Panda movie. Therefore we decided to turn our direction to the movie elements. We soon started to remake the first 6 chapters and introduced in more elements from the plot of the movie," Liu Xi said. The team continued to polish the game by inviting players to the company to help test the game, observing and analyzing their friends' gameplay, and improving the new player tutorials. They also raced against time to adjust the beginning experience and add virtual joystick. The effort paid off when the game officially launched.

Twilight Pioneers Producer Talks the 3 Challenges of Making a Mobile VR Game

Twilight Pioneers is one of the launch titles for Daydream VR and the game was featured by Google in the collection 'Get in the game'. Game Producer Yu Kai talked about how his team addressed motion sickness, combat skill designed for Daydream Controllers, and game narrative in VR, the 3 challenges in creating a mobile VR game.

The first challenge was how they combated motion sickness. The team wasn't aware of significance and prevalence of motion sickness at first for this was the first VR project they worked on. "Later we performed a user test, and seven out of nine users reported motion sickness. After that we started to analyze the motion sickness problem more seriously," he said.

"We added portal locomotion and dynamic FOV into our title. For this version update, we also made some new scenes for teaching skills. Then we performed the second round user test. We have confidence since we have implemented two techniques. However, five out of six users got motion sickness this time. And seems the result is even worse."

After a careful analysis to the players' feedback, the team avoided alternately bright and dark in the game, and they lowered the speed of hacking and chopping as well. "We kept improving our game after the third user test. After we launched our game on Daydream, we found great comments from reddit.com," he said.

The second challenge was how to design combat skills for Daydream Controllers. There are 3 different skills in the game and players can use throw, touch and tilt to perform these skills, and they can interact with different objects around them in three different ways: pulling, lifting, and cutting. It's recommended to play the game on a swivel chair or standing in the middle of a room. However, not everyone can do that.

The team didn't seriously consider the scenarios in which people would play mobile VR games until a later on-site review. "In order to allow more people to play our game, we should have made the game playable even without a swivel chair," Yu Kai said.

And the third challenge was help players catch the key points of the game narrative. Yu Kai presented a video that featured a Youtuber who paid too much attention to a female NPC and ignored the dragon, and therefore didn't realize that he was saved by the NPC from the dragon.

"This lesson taught us that while permanent guides help players to take the next step in the game, they may not prevent players from missing important parts of the game narrative. So that players can both follow the story and understand what step to take next, we think that we should combine navigation cues with triggered story events," he stated.

Yu Kai believes that the more work the developers put into combating motion sickness, the less likely players are to suffer from it. And the developers should be aware of the practical scenarios in which mobile VR games are likely to be played. Finally, try combining navigation cues with triggered story events so that players don’t miss key points of the game narrative.
