Danish developer Campfire Games has just announced that its new CRYENGINE-powered historical FPS War of Rights is now seeking funding on Kickstarter. War of Rights is a multiplayer game set during the perilous days of the American Civil War, in the Maryland Campaign of September, 1862.

Players in the game will be able to play on multiple battlefields of the campaign, and Campfire Games is currently creating four maps: Harper’s Ferry, South Mountain, Antietam and Shepherdstown. Players may choose from a list of regiments that fought in each battle, and also whether they want to play as a lowly private or as Major General.

Campfire Games is focusing on creating a group-based game with real Napoleonic-era tactics combined with the deadly accuracy of the "newer" weapons available in the period of the Civil War. Uniforms, equipment, artillery, houses, fields, and the locales are all portrayed as faithful as possible to the period we're showcasing in the game.

You can check out the full Kickstarter page here and help it on Steam Greenlight by voting for it.

Social and mobile game developer Game Insight has released its newest title, X-Mercs, on iOS devices. The turn-based strategy game sees players lead a team of mercenaries through missions to free the world from mutants created after a comet brought a ‘space-born substance’ to Earth. Check out the trailer below.

Download:

In each battle, players tap on the ground to direct each unit’s movement through the environment. Units have a limited number of action points to spend on each turn for tasks like moving and attacking, as examples. Players are encouraged to move their units between cover positions in the field to avoid enemy attacks.

Players can also put their units into special defense or sentry ‘modes’, which are active during the enemy’s next turn. The former protects the unit from damage if they’re attacked by the enemy, while the latter allows the soldier to automatically take a free shot if a new enemy enters their line of sight during that turn. In addition, players have access to special items during battle, like grenades and med kits, as examples.

In between battles, units may earn promotions, allowing gamers to upgrade their soldiers by unlocking nodes on a skill tree. For instance, players can unlock the Trained Shot ability for their sniper, which, when activated during battle (by tapping a button in the corner of the screen), increases the damage of their next shot by 50 percent. Once a unit reaches Rank VI, players can select one of two specializations for the unit (these can be changed after the fact by spending currency).

Outside of single-player missions, gamers can build and upgrade their base using the materials they collect over time. Building projects take time to complete, but can also be completed instantly using nanites, one of the game’s many currencies. Similarly, units wounded in battle take time to heal, or can be healed instantly using drugs.

Players can use their base to research new weapons and items for their units. Gamers can also upgrade their squad to take more individual soldiers into battle. These team upgrades, as well as new soldiers themselves, are available to purchase with credits, the game’s main currency. While gamers can purchase permanent soldiers for their team, special soldiers are also available to hire, and will be available for a limited amount of time.

In addition to a single-player campaign, X-Mercs offers social features like syndicates (alliances) and player-vs-player battles. Cooperative multiplayer will also come to the game in a future update.

Tony Hughes' Review of the UK Gaming Industry in 2015

This article is written by Tony Hughes (tony@focusinnovation.co.uk), director of Focus Innovation

The Games industry changes constantly, dependent as it is onfrequent technology innovation. Self publishing platforms has made it easier for small and start-up games companies to accessglobal marketplaces. The determinants of success depends on having complementary skills that master new technology andproduce world class games.

A recent Nesta survey noted that are 2000 games companies in theUK, 85% of them self publishing on mobile platforms. King beingthe major financial success story so far with its Candy Crush game.
In the UK, unlike China, there are only two dominant mobile platforms – Google Play and iTunes. In addition to mobile games, social gaming is on the rise in the UK, where Facebook is the mainplayer with 35m registered users.

The UK government has recognised that Research and Development is central to the success of the Games Industry andhas introduced fiscal measures to support its growth. From lastyear Games companies based in the UK can apply for 20% of their development costs to be reimbursed by the government. This has attracted overseas games developers keen to hire creative talent in the UK at a discounted price.

Candy Crush

The government has also renewed the Prototype Games Development Fund with the University of Abertay to encouragerecent graduates to develop their own games.

These moves are part of the recognition of the importance of the creative industries in the UK – as a % of GDP it rivals the finance sector. Also, this a reflection of the growing influence of entertainment platforms in the home and on mobile devices. There are economic and social indicators that point to the increasing prevalence of screen based entertainment.

Through a recent survey of UK families, the Nickelodeon channel found that 75% of parents they surveyed now play video games with their children, and that children aged 10 or under take most of their gaming recommendations from their parents. And gaming together more frequently 34% of children under 11 have a tablet, and they are now tending to get their first smartphones as they enter secondary school. As aresult, this ‘swipe generation’ seamlessly navigates between the digital and real world. They expect 360 play, where each platform adds something to the experience.

In the era of Twitch (120 million viewers a month) and celebrity YouTubers, it’s becoming increasingly important for developers to consider how their games will be viewed as well as played. Over the next 18 months, we’re going to see more developers trying toexploit that, specifically aiming their games at YouTubers.

This is already happening of course. Indie titles like Goat Simulator, Gang Beasts and Speed Runners have been built toappeal directly to YouTubers and Twitch streamers via fun co-op modes, quirky visuals and lots of potential for funny video footage.

In the UK we’ve seen how digital distribution and cheap tools like Unity have empowered a new generation of independent developers. However, that sector is evolving, so that, instead ofproducing niche titles for small audiences, indie teams are now working with console platform holders and Steam communities tocreate genuine crossover smashes. Developers like Mike Bithell, Hello Games, ThatGameCompany and Full Bright may be small, but they’re operating more like the mid-sized Double A studios ofthe 90s, aiming at mass audiences with highly polished titles.

No Man's Sky

Hello Games new title "No Man’s Sky" is backed by Sony Entertainment and was given the keynote at E3 this summer. The company only has 14 employees yet the game engine they are developing is creative genuine excitement in the Games Industry due the size and complexity of the worlds that it can create. Its not only causing waves in the Games industry, the Film industry istaking note. Among the industry people queuing to meet Sean Murray of Hello Games at E3 was Steven Speilberg, the renownedfilm director. We are now seeing the quality of graphics and userinterfaces that will bring the Film and Games industry ever closer.

Of course one of those developments is in Virtual Reality (VR). The key headsets are almost here: the HTC Vive is out in November, the Oculus is possibly February 2016, the Morpheuswill follow in the second-quarter. Microsoft is preparing its Hololens augmented-reality headset; Google is backing the Magic Leap. On top of this, there is already a vast development community, experimenting with the tech, ironing out some of the technical problems and forming the design conventions that will create brand new (and non-nauseous) experiences. Big publishers like Ubisoft are also stepping up their research into the area.

The UK’s inaugural VR Games & Entertainment Conference washeld in Bristol earlier this year. Organised by Opposable Games, itbrought together a wide range of industry professionals engaged in
VR including Bossa Studios, Sony and Oculus.

Oculus was originally funded through a crowdfunding site, Kickstarter and they are becoming increasingly important for the development of Games in the UK with over 35 crowdfunding
companies in operation.

Smite

As the use of crowdfunding evolves, we can expect to see a widervariety of experiments with the process. Major eSports games like Dota 2 and Smite have both used crowd funding to boost the valueof prizes offered at pro-gaming tournaments.

2015 has been the year when the real potential of Games is beginning to be realised. It is still a relatively young industry butthe potential for growth is huge, and the UK is positioning itself tobe at the centre of the evolution of the industry into the dominant entertainment industry.

Talent Guide - *Defensive* Shield Lt. Morales by RegisKillbin

$

Lt. Morales players have been in a constant struggle to stay alive since the hero's recent release. She just received a health buff to increase her survivability, but that doesn't mean you can avoid defensive talents altogether. You still need to shield yourself if you hope to thrive as Lt. Morales.

And that's exactly what this build will help you do. It's the ideal survival build that allows Lt. Morales to stand up for herself during team fights, heal for longer periods, and support her team farther into enemy territory than ever before. See all the talents in the video below, with in-depth discussion on the in-game value of each selection.

For your convenience, I've also included a list of the talents below.

LvlIconNameTooltip
1Trauma TriggerYou gain an untalented Safeguard automatically if you take damage while below 50% Health. This effect has a 20 second cooldown.
4Advanced BlockPeriodically reduces the damage received from Hero Basic Attacks by 50%. Stores up to 3 charges.
7IrradiateEnemies near your Healing Beam's target take 20 damage a second.
10Stim Drone [R]Grant an allied Hero 75% Attack Speed and 25% Movement Speed for 10 seconds. [Cooldown: 90 Seconds]
13Couples TherapyWhile channeling Healing Beam you are healed for 25% of the healing amount at the cost of an additional 4 Mana per second.
16Shield SequencerAfter casting Safeguard, you can cast it a second time within 3 seconds at no cost.
20Caduceus Reactor 2.0While Caduceus Reactor is active you restore 8 Mana a second and gain a Shield that absorbs 50 damage, stacking up to 5 times.

If you want to play Lt. Morales successfully at all, you pretty much have to pick some of these defensive talents. If you want to win a lot, you probably need to take them all. Her lack of an escape makes her far too easy to kill otherwise. Once you get the hang of playing with a real "shield", you'll be winning more games and having more fun along the way.

Deck Guide - *TGT* Dreadmaw Hunter by RegisKillbin

$
0
0

Hunters are typically all about doing damage and launching arrows into the enemy's face. That natural play-style works well for the class, but doesn't fit with the mechanics of the new class legendary cards introduced with The Grand Tournament. If you've been trying to find a deck that incorporates Dreadscale and Acidmaw, the Dreadmaw Hunter is a unique and powerful way to play both deadly worms.

This deck is a strict control-style Hunter. You won't be trying to kill the enemy as quickly as possible, but instead finding answers to every minion they play while assembling an intimidating board of your own.

General Strategy

Your goal is to keep the opponent's board in check at all times. A majority of this deck list is dedicated to removal spells, area of effect damage, and efficient answers to the board. For the early-game, you have a few different ways to keep up. King's Elekk is a solid body that can help you with card advantage. Wild Pyromancer is the perfect answer to hordes of 1/1 minions if you use it with Freezing Trap or Animal Companion. Eaglehorn Bow is perfect for clearing a couple cheap minions. You can also use Unleash the Hounds to catch up if you do fall behind (just be sure not to cast it with Wild Pyromancer on the board).

In the mid-game, you can start to use your heavy-hitting removal like Deadly Shot and Hunter's Mark. They're so cheap and powerful, that you can still start to develop your own minions while clearing theirs. You should look try to get Piloted Shredders out, or Houndmaster-buffed beasts anytime you can. Use Azure Drakes and Sludge Belchers to follow up for continued value.
As you enter the late-game, you can really assert your dominance. Savannah Highmanes might be the best 6-mana minions in the game, Acidmaw is insanely good to swing the board, and Dr. Boom can finish anyone off. If you curve from Piloted Shredder into Sludge Belcher into Savannah Highmane into Dr. Boom while removing a threats with free Hunter's Marks, what on earth can your opponent do to keep up?

How to Mulligan

Your early-game is all about keeping up. You don't need to win in the first few turns, just stay alive and stay close. Sometimes King's Elekk will be enough against slower decks, and it can set you up for Houndmaster buffs and card advantage. Against more aggressive decks, you may need a Wild Pyromancer or Dreadscale for area of effect damage that keeps the enemy from swarming the board in their favor.
Flare, Freezing Trap, and Hunter's Mark might be cheap cards, but you still don't want them in the mulligan. Toss them back for 2- and 3-drop minions instead. The spells will be more valuable in the mid- and late-game when you have excess mana or need big tempo plays. Eaglehorn Bow, Animal Companion, and Unleash the Hounds are also good keeps for the mulligan if you have one of the above cards or the coin.

How to Win

Unlike most Hunter decks that aim to rush the opposing player's health down to zero, this Hunter is all about building an unassailable board of minions and leveraging them for a slower late-game lethal push. You don't have direct damage spells to finish off the enemy, so you have to stick a minion to the board over a few turns and punch them down in chunks until they finally relent to your onslaught.

Matchups
  • Control: In control matchups, this deck has a lot of ways to win. With so much removal, they simply won't have enough threats to drain you. Acidmaw can be combined with Dreadscale, Unleash the Hounds, or Wild Pyromancer for guaranteed board wipes. Hunter's Mark is huge for 0 mana. Freezing Trap or Deadly Shot on an expensive minion can straight-up win games thanks to the tempo advantage. Savannah Highmanes are also nightmares to clear, so your minions should do more work than their on average. If the game runs really long, you will have trouble with card draw, so be sure to swing things as soon as you can with big clears or tempo plays, then finish them off.
  • Aggro: This deck doesn't have heals, so sometimes you'll just be a turn behind on initiative and never quite stabilize. That doesn't usually happen thanks to all the board clears, but it can. Don't be shy using Hunter's Mark early if you need it to kill a cheap but dangerous threat. Value your taunts Sludge Belcher, Houndmaster, and sometimes Animal Companion, as they'll come in handy to slow down damage. Don't wait too long to pull of clears, even if they seem inefficient, because you need enough health to buy time.
  • Combo: There are a handful of taunts to slow down big combo turns, and a timely Freezing Trap can ruin the best of combo plans too. Secret Paladins (which I'm now considering a combo deck) are no match for your removal spells, and Flare absolutely destroys them. This is deck is very favorable to the state fo the meta at the time of publication.
Card Replacements

Depending on what kind of decks you're seeing on the ladder, you can build this deck a few different ways. If the game slows down and less 1/1 hordes are running around, taking out Wild Pyromancer for Steamwheedle Sniper is a stronger control play that helps you net additional value from your hero power. Ironbeak Owl is always relevant if you find yourself facing down too many taunts, divine shields, or scary effects, and its additional beast synergy is perfect.
If you are having trouble with direct damage spells or crazy combos, Loatheb is always a nice addition. His proactive effect is a little different from most of this deck's reactive effects, giving you some additional balance and flexibility.

Summary

The Dreadmaw Hunter is a totally different way to play a  stereotyped class, and that alone is worth a little time with it on the ladder. You'll be surprised how much fun it can be to go control with Hunter, surprising enemy players and winning games against all odds and expectations. It's also a great way to use the Acidmaw and Dreadscale you've had laying around with no deck to call home!

Vainglory Launching in China Soon - Will Super Evil Succeed in Eating Big Cake?

$

Since Vainglory is presented in the Apple's iPhone 6 Event, this game has caught players' attention worldwide. But, what delights the developer Super Evil more is that Vainglory will be soon launched in China.

On Wednesday, Giant Interactive Group, the exclusive publisher of Vainglory in China, announced the date for Vainglory China Invitation, the first e-sport event of Vainglory in China. The match will start in Shanghai E-Sports Arena from Nov. 20 to Nov. 22. It is known that the invitation will be co-sponsored by Giant Interactive Group and Gamefy, a well-known e-sports game channel in China.

In this summer, the VWI (Vainglory World Invitation) hosted by OGN in Korea attracted many players’ attention. Although it can’t be compared with the S5 of LOL, its size and standard are unrivalled in the neozoic mobile games.

The e-sports environment in South Korea has made their reputations abroad, but compared to the five hundred millions mobile game users in China, it doesn’t sound unreachable. For example, e-sports games of League of Legends and Dota2 have huge audience base in China, which creates many professional players who earn tens of thousands of dollars. As for the VCI in China, it adopts the orthodox ideas of VWI, which has been generally regarded as an important step of Vainglory to enter into the Chinese market.

Giant Interactive Group says that they will pay high attention on building the competition and training the players in China. VCI, the first official China competition of Vainglory, it is also the personnel selection of Chinese team for the second VIPL (Vainglory International Premier League),whose goal is to transport excellent players.

For now, Vainglory has gained tens of millions of viewers on Twitch and YouTube and Douyu, the Chinese famous e-sports live-broadcasting platform, also shows great interest in Vainglory. It has recommended the live tutorials of Vainglory on their home page for many times. The industry predicts that VCI is a key step to build the comprehensive international events system, which decides whether Super Evil can swallow the Chinese market which is a big cake.

The Grand Tournament introduced 132 cards to the collections of Hearthstone players, but there aren't many that are still being played in competitive decks today. A vast majority of the expansion's cards have failed to leave an impact at all, but there 10 cards which are seeing play all over the ranked ladder.

In the video below, I identify the 10 best cards from The Grand Tournament, discussing their utility, relevant decks, and powerful effects in detail. You won't be shocked by the top pick, but you might be surprised by a few of the ranks along the way.

If you don't have time to watch the video right now, here's a quick and basic list of the cards.

10. Chillmaw

8. Competitive Spirit
7. Justicar Trueheart
6. Twilight Guardian
5. Living Roots
4. Wyrmrest Agent
3. Murloc Knight

Lilith Games, one of the leading mobile game developers in mainland China, continues to make a push into the international market with their latest update to their game - Soul Hunters. Lilith launched the Chinese version of Soul Hunters in December 2013, introducing a new style of gameplay combining the strategy of a Card-Collection game with animated battles and an RPG-style storyline.

Soul Hunters took East Asian markets by storm, and accumulated over 80 million players in under two years. The international version debuted in June of 2015, being featured on the iTunes homepage in nearly 90 countries shortly after release.
