It’s impossible to say, one game is #1. It’s even harder to give that title to a mobile game, since it feels like a game or two is popping out everyday. So what I did was take the accumulated downloads from the Apple and Google store, and averaged them against the past 4 months of social media hashtags. The list was over 100, so I divided them into three categories:
(Action - Casual - Strategy) and matched them against each other. This gave me a definitive list of 10 games in these categories based on #Trends, Downloads, Social Media, Tournaments, Genre, and Popularity.
ActionCasualStrategy
From this list, I matched it against this year reddit submissions (gamers only use reddit), and found the #1 game.
Coming in with First Place, with over 10 million downloads… Fallout Shelter
After finding out the news, I immediately downloaded the game. I did remember seeing a lot of reddit posts of random things happening on Fallout Shelter. Bethesda does have a large following, and a strong brand - I’ve played Fallout since the first, and seeing a Casual Sim Fallout didn’t sound like my cup of tea. The game starts out smoothly, taking you into Fallout’s old fashioned steam punk feel. Teaching you basics like all games do, I found myself out of tutorial within a few minutes and playing the game. But what to do next?
Collecting Caps* is Fallout Shelter’s form of revenue, and main goal in the game. With Caps you can upgrade and purchase new rooms for you vault, which is required for having more residents, and new technology. Every now and again natural disasters occur, having you to fend off Raiders, or Rad Roaches. If not dealt with properly they will kill your residents, along with other disasters mixed into dealing with the supply needs of your vault community. I didn’t fall in love with the game until I started to rename everyone. Making that connection to your vault dwellers was the single most important move I made. I found myself giving the people actual jobs based on their talents, and sharing my experiences with friends because I gave my dwellers their names.
Although as of now, there is no multiplayer option. This is why I placed this game under Casual, instead of Strategy. If Bethesda were to give us a vault raiding option, I could see this game staying on top for a long time to come. If you are a gamer that’s looking for a game to play in between Hearthstone matches, or waiting in queue for your MOBA, then this is the game for you. It’s easy to play, no time consumption, and no grinding. Give it a try, and start naming your characters if you have tried the game already and didn’t like it. I guarantee that little change, will make the game so much more hilarious and entertaining.
Stay tuned for the #1 Strategy, and Action game coming soon! -MFGLife
