Monster Hunter Online: Gunlance & New Monsters Coming in Jan Update

After 7 years development and six beta tests since 2013, Tencent finally launched pre-open beta test for Monster Hunter Online. In an interview with Duowan, MHO producer Tao Weishi shared their development story and the future plans for MHO.

It’s suffering for both MHO developers and players in the past 7 years

Tao said it’s really hard to keep unremitting with the development. MHO has tried 4 engines in the past 7 years and finally they decided to use CryEngine 3. Since the opening of the non-wipe beta test on Nov 27, 2015, players seem to be happy with MHO graphics. Tao said it’s a great challenge for Chinese game developers to adapt such a huge IP but finally MHO is here and they are pride of what they have completed so far.

MHO producer’s wish - MHO console & Western version

MHO might have offline concert in China and the MH IP will be expanded to many platforms, including the upcoming MH web browser game, mobile game and anime. Tao personally hopes MHO can be back to the console market and maybe launch a western version. However, at current situation, he can only put his energy in the Chinese PC version. Tao knows there are a lot of western players waiting for an English version of MHO but they also have to take Capcom’s feelings into account.

Chinese style monsters are not in current plan, new weapon Gunlance coming in Jan

In Jan 2016, MHO will release a new update which will have ample content for players to explore. MHO will have monthly update in the future. Players can expect to meet new monsters, weapons or new systems.

New weapon Gunlance and three new monsters namely Shen Gaoren, Tartaronis, Rathian as well as new outfits will be available in Jan update.

In addition, Tao emphasizes that MHO won’t be a P2W game. Only outfits without attributes and some convenient items will be sold in the cash shop, which won’t influence the game balance.

Compared to realistic style of FFVII and FFVIII,FFIX is more than a fairy tale. Different characters have unique features with cute shape. Even FFIX is not that gorgeous as FFVII and FFVIII, FFIXis still simple and lovely. Maybe it will affect the players' desire to buy and the sales of FFIX. But some players still regard FFIX as the masterpiece of PS era.

Below are some in-game screenshots of FFIX:

Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) revealed its rating for Ubisof's Tom Clancy's The Division and it ended up being rated as a "mature" game as the content has been related to intense violence, large splashes of blood and a strong language.

The full rating summary can be seen below:
This is a third-person shooter in which players assume the role of a sleeper agent of The Division, a secret government agency designed to respond to major disasters. Several sequences depict corpses, some tied up or hanging from railings, and players must rescue hostages in some levels of the game. Tree of Savior (KR)'s Big Banhammer Also Affects Foreign Players Play with VPN

Tree of Savior developer imcGames swung their banhammer in Korean server recently and took down a large number of accounts that were involved in cheating, bot using, and gold farming. However, the banhammer was struck so hard and led to collateral damage, as bbs.colg.cn, the largest ToS fan forum at China reported that many Chinese players were banned for using VPN programs to play the game.

The guess is it's because some VPNs are also listed illegal software by the publisher, or it's the accounts are bought from third-party websites. That risk is always there when you play an MMO in foreign servers.

The game had enough trouble recently. The game was plagued by bugs after started commercial launch recently. imcGames also had to handle the community's protests against expensive cash shop items.

2015 Is a Lusterless Year for New MMOPRGs in Korea, Only 5 Survived

$

2015 seems to be a dim and dark year for the the Korean PC MMORPG industry. Korean game media thought it's even harder for PC MMORPGs to succeed than reaching for the stars. According to the statistic, 23 new MMORPGs have been released in 2015 but only 5 survived so far with a pretty low survival rate only at 21.7%. Moreover, no new MMORPG is in the top 10 list. Instead, all we see are those familiar old games such as League of Legends, Maplestory, Lineage etc. Korean game media Gamemeca did an annual review of how new PC MMORPGs go in South Korea in 2015. Let's take a look at the report.

PC MMORPG leaderboard from Dec 23 to Dec 29 in South Korea

The first half of 2015

  • Hearthstone
  • ELOA - open beta on Jan 20 (NA version is published by Webzen, available now)
  • Football Manager Online - open beta on March 12 (No NA/EU version)
  • Azera - open beta on April 8 (No NA/EU version, 2nd CBT in China now)

Among them, only Hearthstone is from abroad with the rest three are all developed by Korean game companies. After ELOA entered into open beta, its best rank is in the 13th of the leaderboard, which is not bad but it only lasts for 6 months and then its rank started to decline. Football Manager Online is developed by SEGA Korean company. Though Football Manager is a famous single player game, the online version is about up to the average with a highest rank at 46 and disappeared from the charts in only 2 weeks. As for Azera, an adult MMORPG aiming for male players only stayed in the list for 11 weeks.

The second half of 2015

In the 2nd half of 2015, situation still didn’t improve a lot. The high anticipated MMORPG Maplestory 2 was doing great, ranking at 4th in the list after open beta but it didn’t last long as well. Its ranking got dramatically declined after Nov with the final rank at 29 in the last week of Dec.

Asker and AIMA didn’t go well too, with the best rank at 30 and 36 respectively. unexpectedly, the hyped Civilizations Online is not in the top 10 list but the best achievement since open beta is at rank 30 and is at 40th in the list now. Final Fantasy XIV is popular in the west but things are not the same in Korea with the final rank at 17th. As for Tree of Savior, the ranking increased in Dec after open beta and is now at 13th of the leaderboard.

Except those games mentioned above, many new MMORPGs that came out in 2015 didn’t even appeared in the top 50 list, such as La Lune: Moonlight Bandits, Eternal City 3 Online, Saint Seiya Online, Astra, just name a few.

Maybe due to the decay of the PC MMORPGs that many Korean game companies have changed their strategy to develop mobile games instead?

Clone Report: Episode 1 - Heroes Will

Heroes Will

Alright on today's Clone Report we have Heroes Will, a 2D fantasy RPG. No I'm just kidding, but it might as well be called that because the past 6 months all the games that have been released have just been clones of previous games. This game was a mixture between Heroes Rush (hence the name) and every other card based RPG.

If you sit down and read the story line, it actually has above average art and slightly above average storytelling. I've been playing a lot of these games recently and what I have been looking for on a Solid mobile card based RPG is:
  1. Fair card draw potential
  2. Either quick or dynamic levels (Gameplay)
  3. Character customization
  4. Multiplayer

Card draw potential:
Out of 30 cards that I drew, I received one 3-star, three 2-stars and the rest 1-star characters. This is a relatively low statistic when it comes to other games that I've played in this genre. Not only was this kind of frustrating for me, but when I watched other streamers draw, I found them hitting the same wall as I did. As I continueg to play the game hoping to see some changes in its potential, I only found myself getting more frustrated.

Gameplay:
Each level -since it's a two dimensional game- is actually very dynamic. Compared to other games in the genre, Heroes Will does a fantastic job at putting you into their world. There is not a single moment any character on the screen is sitting still, and yet within all the action you can see everything clear. A lot of the fight scenes remind me of Marvel vs Capcom yet gameplay does not hit that mark, and leaves a lot to be desired.

Having your five person team - each character you possess only has one ability. Only having one ability per character is pretty lame considering how much time you're going to spend leveling them up and equipping them. All said and done I could do without the text on the screen for each skill that's being used but I feel it's tradition in two-dimensional role playing games.

Character Customization:
Although you have 8 item slots per character, the changes “although noted” are not physical. There is zero chance you will change the appearance of your character with equipment, rather, in this game we rely on leveling your character to change its look. Like I said before, this mechanic always deters me from wanting to collect focus time on equipment. Come on developers, if my armor doesn't show up on my person, then how do I show off in multiplayer?

Multiplayer:
Okay here's where uninstalling the app comes in. Developers, once again I'm going to need you to pay close attention. Stop making PvP a freaking ladder, and get LIVE ACTION!

Black Desert Has Counted 120,000 + Preorder Copies by Now

According to the thread at Black Desert official forum, the preorder copies have exceeded 120,000 as of January 2, 2016. The thread will be updated regularly by players themselves. How do players know the number while Daum doesn’t reveal any figure? If a player preorders the game, he’ll receive a notification telling the order number. That’s how a player knows how many people have preordered the game.

Take the image below as an example, the last 7 digits of the order number indicate this player is the 113,895th player who preorders the game.

So is it a lot of preorders? Guild Wars 2 has 1 million pre-orders before launch, The Division has about 600,000 preorders on 3 different platforms so far, and Overwatch has over 150,000 on 3 different platforms now (source: vgchartz). Black Desert is only releasing on PC and the number isn’t bad. What do you think?

EA and DICE's next-gen Star Wars game Battlefront was released on November 17, 2015 and has already sold 12 million copies. Earlier this month, Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore was expecting that Star Wars: Battlefront would be on target to move 13 million units throughout fiscal 2016, which ends in March. It's not hard to imagine that Star Wars: Battlefront will exceed this target.

According Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, The first-person shooter sold approximately 6 million copies in November and an additional 6 million in December for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. With an average retail sales price of $55, that would place revenue at around $660 million so far. Did you buy Star Wars Battlefront in 2015?

I have finally been surprised with a new take on the traditional RPG, Battlehand. Let's take a second and thank the creation team for combining the elements of a card based game and the elements of an RPG bringing you the first true card based RPG.

As the game starts off you get trained on how to play your first character which is a Mage. You start off with a few basic cards which do damage and heal you. The monsters you fight are just basic level creatures that only take one or two cards to defeat, but as you progress the monster's level increases and they begin to get a lot harder. You get to add new characters to your team as you progress through the game and unlock them. Unlike your traditional card based RPG, you are not forced to randomly draw them.

Unlocking different characters and training them cost gold, which is acquired through playing each quest. Now since the basic fundamentals are established let me start organizing this review.
  1. Gameplay
  2. Art and Animation
  3. Card System
  4. Multiplayer

Gameplay

The designers took a very cartoonish approach when it comes to gameplay. Each character is generally three-dimensional but fun to look at, and the card section reminds me a lot like Hearthstone. As you cast each card onto the opposing enemy creature, you pick up the game rather quickly and find thdat strategy is the key element to success. For a gamer like I, this game is a perfect addition to my role playing repertoire.

Leveling up ( heroes ) also cost gold which pushes all the priority to grinding. Choosing which hero to level is completely up to you as well as which cards to level making your deck and hero fully customizable. Picking which card and hero to level completely changes the style of your game play. I give this game the highest score so far that I have reviewed, when it comes to gameplay anyway... good job Battlehand.

Art and Animation

The Cartoon-like graphics do make the game run smoothly on tablet and mobile devices. Although I feel like a lot of games are choosing to take this route because it's easier for their designers. A new take on design and animation is greatly needed in the mobile role playing in genre.

Playing the cards, casting the spells , and attacking is extremely fun in Battlehand. Unlike some card based RPGs this game allows you to choose each individual enemy to attack, but like most turn based games which character attacks first is relied upon order. When you cast the spells they fully animate and reflect the damage based on the cards description. Battlehand does an amazing job at putting you in the front line of a role playing game.

Card System

The card system in this game is unique being that the cards that you randomly draw our only your spells. To make these spells stronger you can also draw and obtain buff cards which combined with gold level up your cards individual's strength. As you progress through the game you are allowed to attribute 5 elements and infuse them into some cards. As the cards level progresses so does the strength and ability of the individual card.

Separate from the hero system you level the individual cards through combining the buff cards only. Your hand changes depending on which turn ( hero ) you're playing during in game battle. Your allotted 10 spaces for 10 different cards of your choosing at the start of the game. The cards range from spells, support abilities, attack abilities, conjurings, there are so many different varieties I am NOT able to tell you, yet another reason this game is so different from your traditional mobile role playing game.

Multiplayer

Unfortunately this game has yet to change the meta when it comes to multiplayer. I will not give this game 100% support because of the fact it's not a live PvP battle and yet we are still playing the traditional ladder. Even when it comes to questing, you only are allowed to play your allies main hero.
Because of these strict multiplayer restrictions I cannot truly say this is a true MORPG. I feel like game developers are slapping a ladder on every game, then advertising massive multiplayer.

Ultimately aside from those few issues I've had, I would still recommend everyone to download this game. Give it a shot and test out how you feel about this card based RPG mashup. If you are anything like me, you'll appreciate their attempt, but still search for the perfect mobile MORPG.
