Mobile Game Review - Lords of War: Royal Melee

The Clones are coming back as a new plethora of MMORPGs are being released in our app stores. The first one want to introduce you to it's called Lords of War: Royal Melee. The game starts as all your traditional RPGs do. You are introduced into your four character classes Rogue, Warrior, Mage, and of course the Paladin. Immediately taking you into the storyline, you are given your full abilities to demonstrate late combat potential. As a cutscene fades away you are reduced into your basic character, with no equipment, skills, or levels.

Gameplay
The gameplay is smooth as I didn't see or experience any bugs. But adventuring through the campaign felt exactly like every other mobile RPG. Sure you might have a slightly different storyline or maybe your abilities look a little different as well, I'm pretty sure every mobile RPG is running the same engine, so you’re going to get that same repetitive feeling. Smashing the standard monsters for points, then gaining levels that seem to be slight variations the previous ones brings zero imagination and no real Adventure.

The home screen contains various play options but each of them is exactly like every other mobile RPG. I found absolutely nothing new in this game that I haven't already found in a similar mobile RPG that I've played last year.

Value
This is the only strong suit Lords of War possesses. Within each Quest you were able to obtain equipment suitable for each level. Although, with a quick visit the store showed me that $5 - $10 can probably make you invincible during the campaign. That indicates this game is hands-down Pay-to-Win, so - if you intend on making it anywhere on the multiplayer ladder, then go ahead and drop $5. Sure the value is fair and grinding might put you on an even field, but where is the fun in dropping money for epic equipment when the game has a  full campaign?!?!?
Complete sell out franchise.

Multiplayer
This game has definitely geared its multiplayer system towards the Battle Arena. In each zone you can tell the use of individual servers, which sadly excludes our favorite - open world feel. The fighting system runs pretty smooth and the hitboxes are large compared to your actual characters. This makes landing combos fairly simple but distracts from any strategic fighting. In advertising, this game says it's geared for North American players, I'm guessing that means it's intended for TapRPG players because this game has no actual combos??? What a waste of game developers time.

Creativity
The reason why I am bringing attention to this game is not because it has any potential for creativity. This game is a perfect example of a cheap clone RPG trying to break into the genre. The first thing I would pay attention to is when looking through pictures in the App Store: if most of the images are covered in text - that's a solid indicator that the gameplay isn't up to par. Next, when your basic four classes don't include any backstory, you should automatically know that there's no way this game is going to draw you in.

Aside from the action and average leveling system, I find Lord of War: Royal Melee at the bottom of my 2PlayList.
