“The way we play games has changed,
so why shouldn’t the games we make be changing?”

-Adam Bohn (Artix)

Adventure Quest 3D is still currently in its pre-beta, but it’s only getting better as time goes on. On May 17th, 2016, Artix put up an article regarding an intro preview for the game. I was able to get a live preview and also got to talk to the devs and learned about expectations, ideas, and had a nice time talking about Cysero and how he is now the new Ferghus.

“Looks like you spent a lot of dragon crystals on this one, so I’ll break it first”
(Bad face swap is bad)

The main things the article talks about is how they added framework for new features including crafting, the “use menu” for potions you have, the ability to transform into a shadow wolf form, different types of cutscenes, and even more.  We were able to see some of the features in the preview with the devs and hear about many aspirations they wish to do with the game.

There are currently 3 kinds of cinematic cutscenes, the first of which are talking heads. It allows for JRPG style dialogue that can be from 1 up to 4 characters at a time, with the possibility of choices. The second one are “cinematic cutscenes” which are basically 3D versions of the already existing Adventure Quest cutscenes. The final one is purely video. However, there is not much information regarding this.

A cutscene in the introduction of the game, and by far my favorite line.

The boss in the intro is what appeared to be a new boss character known as  Gorthor the Warfiend, a terrifying monster that wields an axe. Artix wanted to step up and mature the game, and this boss details the colors and tone that raises the bar for this game. We can only wonder what the devs have in store for us in the future with bosses.

He’s only level two, but he’s looking great…. And a bit creepy!

In addition to raising the bar with the bosses and making it more mature, the developers aspire to pack their game with weird events and scenarios to ensue. A great example of this is in the Battleton’s inn, where if you go into a specific location inside, you can see a very weird slime boss.

I think we might need a health inspector...

With dungeons, there will be the usual dungeons where you can take your time, and if you die, you can just respawn back to where you began. However, they also aspire to make another type of dungeon than the regular dungeons. In other types of dungeon there are no respawns, making the game more challenging, meaning the party will need to fight one area at a time before progressing.

Dragon Chickens in our dungeon? Impossible!

So far there are a few classes with few skills for each: Warrior, Rogue, Mage, and Guardian. However, the devs aim to make 40-50 classes with their own trees and more skills. Points of specific skills in the classes means a diverse skill  tree, pushing the whole every character is different aspect of the game. You could have any class in the game for no inventory cost, and can change your class at any time.

The game is a super fast install and is small due to a system they are using. For any of the files  you don’t have, the server automatically downloads the file for you. All areas are kept in small modular files and are basically 1MB, so if you had no files, the server installs them for you. The game self-cleans from time to time as well, making the overall size of the game’s file smaller. This is great especially for when playing on your phone, to reduce the time of waiting for things to load so you can just play with friends.

Currently the most difficult situations they are facing are the demands of the different platforms and also on how the UI would be like. So far, the UI looks fine, but while they continue to add more buttons, they want to find a way to assure it doesn’t look cluttered for mobile users. On top of that, every device has different quirks and things that function differently, creating challenges for the devs. The android version of the game seems to be playable currently though, and the PC one as well, so all that we’re waiting for is the iPhone version, and we can’t wait.

Let us squat for good luck

There is no official live date for the game as of yet, however they will continue to work on the game more and more. The devs would like to bring many things back from the original games as well as adding new additions and concepts, add idles and allow your characters to sit, fix lighting, and to add a slider for sound and music.  Once it’s live, they believe their game will still be here down the road just like all of their games that are still up and running, and that there will be an ongoing story and eventual arc overhauls. At the end of the day, the devs are grateful and  they thank community for support. If you want to give any input into the game, you can contact them and they will listen and see what they could do.

Big thanks to Artix Entertainment for the custom capes and swords along with their time!
