When speaking of MOBA games, I know League of Legend and Dota2 will first pop up in your mind. Indeed, as the
report indicates, the two games already dominate the MOBA genre and will
hold two-third of the MOBA market through 2016. Still, with the prevalent of MOBA games and the revolution of the eSport scene, more and more game companies started to set food in, such as Blizzard, EA, Crytek etc.
In order to take a share of the spoils, many companies tried to make innovations based on the basic MOBA game concepts. Here, we found an interesting phenomenon: shooter MOBA seems to be a trend that many developers would pay attention to by coincidence, for example, Overwatch, Gigantic Battleborn etc.
Supernova: RTS + MOBA
Status: closed beta (July 24, 2015)Supernova is a free-to-play RTS inspired MOBA developed by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment. It brings innovation through its exciting sci-fi universe that offers upgradeable minions, crafting from drops, the mysterious Supremacy ability and an unparalleled line-up of commanders.
The maps in
Supernova are same as LoL and Dota2 – the typical 3 lanes map but unlike them, killing enemies won’t reward players with golds so that is not that important as in other similar games. Players have to collect resources to upgrade or buy skills. Besides, the exp gained in the game can be used to upgrade commander attributes and skills.
Supernova is currently in closed beta and will be available for PC later this year.
Hyper Universe: Side-scrolling + MOBA

The map setting is very interesting in Hyper Universe, which are consisted of seven different tiers, with both PVE and PVP action. Both teams spawn on left and right side in the middle tier with towers protected. The other three tiers above and below the middle one are full of neutral mobs with the top tier houses the PVE stage boss (much like Roshan in Dota2). Six roles are available to choose: Striker, Technician, Stalker, Bruiser, Tanker, and Supporter.
Gigantic: FPS + MOBA
Status: closed beta (August 28, 2015)
Gigantic, the free-to-play shooter MOBA, has
started closed beta on August 28 on both PC (you have to upgrade to Windows 10 in order to play) and Xbox One. The game is developed by Motiga, leading by James Phinney who was also the lead designer for StarCraft.
In Gigantic, players battle alongside a massive guardian in a fight for supremacy. It also tests teamwork, tactics, and timing as players confront a five-story foe and conquer a fantasy battlefield.
Whether players favor shooters, action RPGs, or traditional MOBAs, "Gigantic" has heroes for various playstyles-and strategic depth they'll find satisfying. The third-person perspective puts the emphasis on movement and action. Players leap, dodge, and sprint across the battlefield, then unleash a devastating combo... before scurrying to cover as the enemy guardian draws near.
Wildfire: Action + MOBA
Status: closed beta (November 13, 2015)
Wildfire is an action MOBA developed by China-based NetEase, trying to create a new type of MOBA different than others in the market. The game sets in the end of the world and uses 3D camera view instead of a fixed 2.5D view angle that found in most MOBAs. There are melee heroes, humanoid machines, ranged heroes with guns, and those who cast spells, etc. - you can expect a steampunk vs. fantasy battle.
Thanks to Havok's technology, Wildfire introduces in Quick Time Combat system, allowing players adapt combos based on the situation of the fight in real time. Quick Time Combat (QTC) shares similar concept with QTE, which needs players to respond to the combat situation according to self condition as well as opponent's actions. The implement of non-targeting and ragdoll physics make combat in Wildfire more fast and realistic.
In most MOBAs you fight the enemies on the ground but in Wildfire, you can expect three-dimensional fight that stretches from the ground to the mid-air. You can even climb on the wall and attack your opponent from above.
Wildfire features 3v3 and 5v5 modes and the game is schedule to enter the next closed beta in China on November 13th and it will probably hit the western market in the near future.

Status: released on Oct 13, 2014
Shards of War is a so-called next-gen MOBA developed by Bigpoint. It blends in sci-fi setting with shooting element and is redeemed to be the evolution version of Merc Elite.
Like most of MOBAs, you will join into a team of 5 players, fight against your rivals and advance towards their base to destroy their headquarters in a 15 to 20-minute match. This time, the characters no longer use cold weapons, but technological weapons. However, unlike mainstream MOBAs, Shards of War utilized classical RPG's WASD controls which will let you seamlessly control your Sentinel (hero) with run and gun action.
Shards of War is all about team work. You fight together. You win together. In Shards of War every action accounts for you AND your friends. And this has a direct effect on your entire team.

Overwatch: FPS + MOBA
Status: closed beta (fall, 2015)
At BlizzCon 2014, Blizzard unveiled a brand-new team based FPS game named Overwatch, which is their first new franchise in a decade. Overwatcg features an amazing cast of heroes and set in an all-new Blizzard game universe. You can play as soldiers, scientists, adventurers and oddities to fight with your enemies on a 6 vs 6 battleground. Many players said the game is similar to TF2, but in fact, it is still a very different game. TF2 has a limited number of roles with some more customization through weapon choices. Overwatch also has some more mobility, with some heroes that can fly or use grapple hooks. Overwatch is more about hero’s abilities than it is about putting a crosshair over the other heroes. From a time-jumping adventurer, to an armored, rocket-hammer-wielding warrior, to a transcendent robot monk, players have master different heroes’ abilities and their play-style. Blizzard guaranteed that no two heroes are the same.
