Wildstar Free to Play Closed Beta Review

$

0
Wildstar, the MMO by NCSoft and Carbine Studios, will know a revolution during the next couple of weeks with the change of its economic model. From a paid subscription to being entirely free-to-play, the title will be expected to bring new adventurers, be they new or returning players, to cover every corner of Nexus. On this occasion, the game will be entitled to a significant update that I had the pleasure to test in the currently ongoing Closed Beta.

Among the major changes brought by this update, there is a new instance, the Alpha Sanctuary which offers players a chance to learn more about the mysteries Nexus. Other changes will also include the apparition of a unique random reward system through the fortune teller Madam Fay, a revamping of the challenge system, new transportation options, and an overhaul of the crafting feature, to cite a few. Of course, with the economic model being the main point of this update, a few changes on this side should also be expected, with the introduction of a new loyalty program that rewards players investing real money into the game and their characters.

All these new developments will delight the veterans of Nexus, but the newcomers have not been forgotten. To facilitate their discovery of the world and offer them the best possible gaming experience, the game has been reworked for comfort. It will be easier to see where the next goal is, daily connections will be rewarded, sprinting has been improved, along with many other things. Finally, new players can choose where they will begin their adventure and can create their avatar without having to worry too much about the different implications of such a choice. In short, this is a major update that all (or most) will enjoy.

Wild star, dangerous counties
The Nexus planet has been discovered. Besides its unusual fauna, flora and its strange, yet generous, resources, this new world is home to the relics of an ancient civilization that left behind technology that makes the most advanced races of the Wildstar universe appear primitive. Unable to share such a windfall, two factions begin a race to claim their rights to the planet, with sabotage and mass murder schemes running wild. On one hand, Mecharis, Drakens, Cassians and Chuas are members of the Dominion faction, an arch-militarized society crammed with religious fanatics. On the other, Granoks, Mordeshs, Humans and Aurins make the Exiles Factions, ecologists rebels seeking a new home. And amid all this chaos, we, the players, are supposed to tip the side of the balance in favor of our race.

With two factions, four Paths, six classes and eight races, a large degree of choice is to be expected from the first minutes in the game. The creation of characters offers a multitude of possibilities, all while being comprehensive enough to avoid confusing players. Keep in mind, however, that some of the choices made here will largely affect your experience in the game. There is, of course, the choice of a faction and race. This will have an impact on the zone your character will start in, as well as who will be your friends, and who you should kill on sight. Then, there are the choices that will affect your gameplay, starting with the class. Wildstar offers a pretty unique selection with the Engineer, Esper, Medic, Spellsinger, Stalker and Warrior. While some of these classes will fit the usual archetypes to an extent, they offer enough flexibility to stand out from other MMO's, something that will be appreciated by players who like to diversify their characters with unique builds.

Successful Gameplay
If the classes offer various agreeable mechanics, the gameplay is equally appealing, centered around a dynamic combat system. While such a dynamic battles is rather standard in all the recently released MMO's, WildStar spices things up a bit by focusing on what is known as "Telegraph" attacks. Put simply, every single skill in Wildstar possesses a specified area of effect, delineated as colored areas visible on the ground. Basic, low-level enemies and player abilities use relatively simple telegraph designs, with a straight line or a cone. At higher levels, however, they tend to be far more detailed, and especially treacherous. In short, players will always have to be wary of hostile telegraphs, while staying in range of those of support allies. A second of inattention, especially when up against multiple enemies, can often lead players to a premature death.

A Plethora of Content
In terms of quests, WildStar remains rather traditional, with the usual "defeat X number of X enemies", "collect X number of X items", talking to NPCs or delivering items to them, and so on. So on this point, WildStar does not do much better than the competition. The difference here is, however, that these quests don't feel as grindy as they normally. Carbine effectively intelligently handles the players by constantly keeping on their toes. While the unusual combat system is distracting enough, the game has various elements incorporated in the different maps, including area event challenges that pop up occasionally, and the different Path missions. The latter are especially well thought out, with Soldiers being tasked with objectives related to combat, Scientists analyzing the different areas of Nexus to uncover its secrets, Settlers building new outposts and upgrading towns, and Explorers being experts at cartography and the discovery of new areas. Each of these Paths reward players that delve deeper into them, not only with various items, but also with valuable skills, like the ability to teleport teammates, reducing falling damage, or summoning various utility bots and NPCs.

Graphically, the style of WildStar is controlled from start to finish, and Carbine's MMO displays a faultless artistic sense. The environments, besides being varied, are stunning. The characters, in addition to possessing distinguished characteristics, benefit from fluid and worked animations. It should, however, be noted that the optimization remains rather flat and does not allow weaker configurations to run the game at high settings. Older machines, and those equipped with integrated graphics should expect to suffer from appropriate frame-rate drops in certain zones.

Finally, again content-wise, Wildstar does not disappoint, offering a good number and variety of PvP and PvE activities. The upcoming F2P release will also bring new features, and upgrade existing ones. The housing system, for one, has been upgraded to allow players to build on a plot that is twice as big as compared to what it used to be. Players will also be able to summon World Bosses, and defeat them with groups of 20 players or more.

Conclusion
You've probably been told this before, but if you are expecting a revolutionary MMORPG, you can go your way. Yet, if it retains a classic atmosphere from start to finish, WildStar does its job admirably. Its developers have indeed picked the best out of features that have already proven themselves in order to concoct a game that will speak to a maximum of people. Thus, despite a traditional, if not monotonous, leveling experience, and a forgettable interface, WildStar is probably one of the best MMO released in the recent years. A must-try for fans of the genre when it goes Free-to-Play.

Mobile Fantasy Card Game Spellstone Review

$
0
0

Spellstone is a new mobile fantasy card game, developed by Kongregate that recently launched on Android and iOS. The game mechanics are quite simple so the game is quite addictive for both new and veteran players.

You start the game with a few basic cards and you can earn more by completing the “Adventure” mode. The tutorial is also included in the first stages of the single player campaign, and it does a good job explaining how the combat works, what special abilities each card have, and what features are available at a given time. Each Adventure stage will award a new card upon completion, and you can also redo each stage to earn improved cards by defeating tougher enemies.

The combat is straight forward, as you can only attack the card in front of yours (if your front is empty you attack the enemy hero), so the only tactic available besides choosing the right card is positioning.  I loved that they introduces a speed button, available in each match, so if you got the basics and want to speed things a little bit, you have this option at your disposal.

Each card features a basic Attack Power and Defence Points (similar to Hearthstone) and a Delay Value (you need to wait a few turns until the card is activated). Besides these basic values, the more advance cards (rare, epic, etc) come with one or more special abilities that sometimes become a game changer.

Here are some card abilities that I found so far:
  • Armor (each turn the opponent needs to do more damage than your armor to be able to touch your life);
  • Vengeance (when the card takes damage it gives one point of damage back to the enemy);
  • Barrier Aether (reduces the next damage dealt to a random allied Aether creature);
  • Bolt (deals damage to a random enemy creature);
  • Poison (poisons enemies and deals additional damage at the end of turn);
  • Pierce (reduces the effect of enemy Armor and Barriers);
  • Heal (heals a random allied creature);
  • Empower (boosts attack of a random allied creature);
  • Hex (Increase damage dealt to a random enemy creature)
Each of these abilities have different levels so you have a lot of mixing possibilities when creating your deck. I have currently a 15 cards deck, but I don’t know if I will be able to increase it at a later stage.

Besides completing the campaign mode, you can also buy random cards for 100 gold (in game currency) or send your hero in a scouting mission (similar with the Garrison system from Warlords of Draenor).

Each card can be enchanted, upgraded or disenchanted. Usually the basic cards gain a few stats more when enchanted and a new ability when upgraded. In order to “fuse” a card (that’s the term used by developers for upgrading) you need a similar enchanted card. So you get two basic cards, enchant them twice and after that fuse them to create a more powerful version of that card.

After creating your deck you can also get to choose a hero that can be changed or enchanted as your journey continues. Each hero has one or more special abilities, similar to the ones I presented above.  At first there are only a few heroes available, but as you advanced in PvP ranking you will unlock more powerful ones.

I said PvP, but the “Bounty” system is more of an arena where you face another player deck, controlled by the AI. Here you get to test your skills against other decks and earn a reasonable amount of gold after each match. As you advance in rank, the bounties will award more gold.

There is also a guild system implemented, but I failed to understand how things work there. All I figured is that you get some bonus gold when entering a guild, and that the % value differs from a guild to another so they probably invest some kind of currency (maybe gold) for some guild skills.

All of these features are working flawless and will grant you a few hours of pleasant gameplay, but (Yeah, you know there is always a but these days) Spellstone is using the Energy System, that anti-gaming system that ask you to wait or pay in order to continue playing. The good part is that it recharges at a reasonable pace, but still remains a casual game.

Anyway if you liked Heartstone or if you want to start playing Card Games, Spellstone is a must try game.

TGT Hunter Card Review For Arena

$
0
0

Since some time passed since The Grand Tournament release and the arena meta settled a bit it is time to review the cards and see how they perform in arena. Today I will cover new cards released for hunter class in TGT and how good they are in arena. I won't cover epic and legendaries because you encounter them not often enough. I will rate the cards in a scale from 1 to 5.

Brave Archer-2

In arena it is really hard to make a face deck work because you can’t reliably draft your damage. This makes Brave Archer only an average 2/1 for 1 mana. Most of the time the effect will only deal 2 damage and then the Archer will die to a ping or other creatures and will accomplish nothing. If you want to use the effect you will have to be top decking and if you are you certainly won’t want to have a 2/1 at that stage of the game. This essentially makes Brave Archer a Murloc Raider.
Bear Trap-3

3/3 worth of stats seem pretty good for 2 mana but in reality Bear Trap is only an average card.How effective it is heavily depends on your opponent’s skill as they can just not attack your face, trigering the trap and giving them tempo. If you’re ahead your opponent most likely won’t be hitting your face and that means that Bear Trap is useless if you’re ahead. But if you’re behind on the board Bear Trap becomes a Ironfur Grizzly for 2 mana which is above average in terms of stats.

King’s Elekk-5

King’s Elekk is a Bloodfen Raptor (already average card) + ability to draw a card. This makes King’s Elekk a top tier pick in arena. In the worst case scenario you will get a Bloodfen Raptor, in the best case scenario you will get a 3/2 beast for 2 which card text says draw a card. If you compare that to Novice Engineer you get 2/1 more stats which is huge. You should definitely pick as many King’s Elekk in your draft as you can, even if your deck has a low curve and won’t win many jousts.
Power Shot-5

Almost a Consecration for 1 mana less. Power shot is amazing in arena because you get very efficient damage. You can think of it as you just got 3 arcane shots in one card. Definitely a good pickup even in the more aggressive decks as removal is great in arena and AoE removal is even better.
Ram Wrangler-1

You can’t consistently get Ram Wrangler to activate because you won’t be able to draft many bests in your deck, have them in your hand, and have them on the board. Ram wrangler’s text is worth 2 mana and if you play a 3/3 for 5 mana without a god effect you will just lose so much tempo. This will make Ram Wrangler a dead card in your hand. Also it’s hard to have beast to stick on the board so you can even play Ram Wrangler. Overall it demands too much to make it work
Ball of Spiders-3

A lot of people overlook the potential of this card in arena. Obviously it is very slow tempo wise as you will be playing 3 1/1 minions for 6 mana which will hurt your tempo a lot. It is important to understand that unlike in constructed a random beast from constructed is almost equal to a card in your deck. With this in mind you get to “draw” 3 cards and have 3 1/1 minions. Overall this is average results if you compare it to Nourish you just got 3 1/1 beasts for 1 mana. The fact that they’re beasts also is important sometimes if you draft a Hound Master or some other cards with beast synergy.

Granblue Fantasy has made it one of the biggest booths at this year's Tokyo Game Show with a massive airship and a huge screen as well as a giant building behind the screen, to advertise the game. It is a social turn-based RPG where you can expect most of the game plays that a RPG should have. It also features a job-class system and players are able to summon powerful creatures.

If you are a fan of JRPG, you gotta be happy as Cygames announced at TGS 2015 that they are going to ship Granblue Fantasy outside of Japan to the west in March, 2016. It's currently available in Japanese for iOS and Android platforms and also on PC with Google Chrome. If you are going to play in the Japanese version, here's a detailed guide about the menu translation and more than that.

Deck Guide - *TGT* Budget Aggro Hunter by RegisKillbin

Hunters are often considered the scourge of the Hearthstone ladder because all they do is go for the face with reckless abandonment and a general lack of skill. That is an unfortunate reality in many ways, but it also makes Hunters a great class for beginners who are still trying to learn the ropes while still climbing the ladder. This deck will have you going face without delay!

Check out my detailed video below to see all the cards in this list, along with intricate analysis of their role in the deck. I also cover mulligans and potential upgrades as your collection starts to grow. When it comes to strategy, you really only need to know one thing: go face.

You should now have a better understanding of all the cards, so here's a convenient decklist to help you recreate the TGT Budget Aggro Hunter in-game.

This deck might not look like much due to all the free cards and average mana cost, but it still packs one heck of a punch. You should easily be able to pilot it to rank 15 in record time, and even climb up to rank 10 or more with patience and practice. Just be sure to go face, and go face often.
