Gameplay
AoD Awakening reminds me of a mashup between Plants vs Zombies, and Magic Rush. That being said, there aren’t many lane based strategy RPGs for mobile. In Armies of Dragons: Awakening - You are tasked to destroy the enemy tower, with the use of upgradable warriors and spells. As the enemy walks towards your tower you place warriors in their path to ensure they don't do any damage to your tower. As you choose which units do best against the enemy, you also have to consider which element fits the situation. As you train each unit, you also are able to bestow elemental magic onto them.

The fact that you have spells, units, elements, and lanes makes the standard gameplay very interesting. The strategy - aside from protecting your base - is also knowing which elements conquer what. Outside of battle, you have your inventory, and store - where you can level your warriors, base and spells. If you are more of a defensive player, you have a lot of base upgrades to choose from, rather, if you play like I do - very aggressively - then you can focus on leveling your warriors. I feel the spells are more of a gambit, you don't need them, but just in case it is always good to have spell handy.

Value
You don't really have to worry about value so much in this game. Defeating levels gives you coins, which in turn you can use to upgrade your warriors, spells, and of course your Tower. Grinding through levels to acquire income isn't as hard as you think. But of course, like most mobile RPGs, repetition does seem to get in the way. Luckily the multiplayer system is what this game seems to be designed for, which means grinding will have a lot of value for tryhards.
Drawback: Your energy system does take awhile to refill, and they don’t give you much to game with.

Multiplayer
I can foresee this game being equally competitive as Plants vs Zombies, and Magic Rush. The only issue is that the genres are currently saturated so AoD:Awakening might need to steal a community from other games. With it's launch already being somewhat successful, you'll find yourself a short queue with a variety of players. I say somewhat because with it’s release came a plethora of bugs. For the Android and Apple release, the bugs outweigh the performance and until the next update I can see the release hurting them more than it is helping them.

Creativity
I wouldn’t have chose this game unless it was somewhat creative. It is definitely a new take on the traditional “tower” defence, giving you that “live action” feel. With the addition of upgradable warriors and elements, Armies of Dragons: Awakening will be a force to be reckoned with. The sound effects are the standard short sound bits, with no real background music. Although there is plenty of sound, I don’t find it at all entertaining to listen to. The artwork is slightly under par, giving you fun filled animation and slight scenery changes. They chose not to use the cartoon blocky look, but instead gave us the 2D moving image look. Aside from the obtrusive Ads, and all the bugs - the game itself is actually great. But, until the next update fixes all the issues, I won’t recommend anyone download this game.
6.3/10
