Battleborn-A revolutionary FPS/MOBA, Alpha Review

Battleborn
, a game that gives off a MOBA-like first impression, with its unique cast of heroes, the mindless hordes of minions constantly pushing towards the opposing base and its 5v5 multiplayer maps.

Despite all that, the developer tea
m, GearBox Software, labels it as
next-gen hero-shooter, because actually there are a lot more going on than the traditional 3-lane pushing which defines the MOBA genre.

Before we take a more in-depth look into what the game has to offer, here are the basic information you need to know about the game.

Battleborn will make its debut for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on May 3, 2016, it will cost 60$ and it will include about half out of the 25 characters  for free, two story-mode episodes (with more chapters planned to be released in the future), 3 multiplayer modes.

If you pre-order the game you will also gain a unique in-game title and golden character skins for some of the game’s heroes. (Thorn, Reyna, Montana, Marquis and Rath)

Let’s move on to the game’s main features:

1. Characters
2. Campaign
3. Multiplayer.

1. The playable characters

When I first opened the game, I did what I always do with that kind of games,
browse the playable heroes.

And I have to say that the developers’ description of the character cast as
A tremendous band of badass heroes
Fully lives up to its name!

You want a beefy macho wrester, you have it.

An eagle commando, there you go.

My personal favorite, a ninja mushroom. Well, here it is.

A cute penguin inside a deadly mecha-robot. Ta-da!

A punk girl with a boomerang and a demon ghost as her companion. Look no further.

This group of badasses fight in an effort to establish their new home in the star Solus which is the only beacon of hope for the universe's surviving factions. The characters belong to one of the five different factions:
the United Peacekeeping Republics
Eldrid
Last Light Consortium (LLC)
Rogues
Jennerit Imperium
Each character comes with his own playstyle and set of skills.
The heroes have six abilities each, three which you actively use in-game and three passives which are something like traits, in RPG terms. They are also classified under three simple categories:
Attacker, Defender and Supporter. I should also mention that despite the game being called a shooter there quite a few character who fight in melee range.

2. Story mode

If you had played any of the Borderlands’ games then you are probably already familiar with the caustic humor and witty dialogue that characterize the series. Well, Battleborn was developed from the same company that created Borderlands and yes, they managed to make it work once again. I’ve played two out of the three available episodes in Alpha Phase, specifically “The Algorithm” and “Void’s Edge” and there were numerous moments which cracked me up. Also, it should be mentioned that the developers took it one step further and implemented that side of the game in multiplayer maps as well, via the A.I.helper who offers you advice during the battle in her own, unique way.

Match starts
“Let’s set this sh*t on fire.”

Unlike Borderlands which consists of a quest-driven open world model, Battleborn’s story consists of several different episodes each with its own story, enemies and final boss. You can either play with friends or alone. They have scaling levels of difficulty and high replaylability. Also, the loot you find can be used in multiplayer.
The boss of the first episode, Geoff the robot which believes that is a spider.

He has some very interesting dialogue to say.

3. The multiplayer

In addition to the story campaign, Battleborn has also and three multiplayer modes. That’s also, where the MOBA element comes from. There are three maps available:

-Incursion: That’s the typical lane pushing map where you have to destroy the enemy sentry robots before they destroy yours. This is actually the most MOba-like feature of the game. Though, it has some nice differentiations from the typical MOBA. For example you can use the money you earn to build and upgrade turrets along the lanes or go and beat up neutral camps which you can later recruit to your forces.

-Meltdown: This mode reminded me of SMITE’s Arena mode, but in a funnier way. You have to protect and safely escort your minions as they so valiantly make their way towards the incinerator in the middle where they dive in and turn into scrap metal.
Oh…the iron-y!
The team with the most scrap metal at the end of the game wins.

-Capture: This mode was not available when I played the game during Alpha, but it as you can guess from the name it is much like the Capture-the-flag mode in FPS games, only way more badass!

Here you can see the official Trailer for the Multiplayer

What are your thoughts on Battleborn?
Are you excited to play it?

Mobile Game Review - Kingdom Hearts: X Unchained "Casual MMO or Strategy RPG???"

$

0
Kingdom Hearts: X Unchained

“2D platformer, in a 3D world with an interesting take on turn-based combat.”

I was worried when Kingdom Hearts: X Unchained [KHXU] was first announced. The graphics looked shoddy, the combat system flawed, and the release date…sigh*. Glad they pulled themselves together before launch.

Gameplay
Is this a strategy RPG or a casual MMO? - It’s hard to tell with these different elements coming together beautifully in this Mobile Masterpiece. I have been a huge fan of all the Kingdom Hearts games, so I have been patiently waiting for Unchained to come out for almost a year. If you are also familiar Kingdom Hearts lore, then you will feel very familiar with the universe you're put into. Fighting against the Darkness you must obtain keyblades to unlock different Disney universes and rescue them. Meeting all your friends along the way you can equip their abilities in the form of a medal to make you stronger. Keyblades and Medals each have classes; Power beats Speed, Magic beats Power, and Speed beats Magic.

You start the game creating your avatar from an average amount of choices, then selecting a union which chooses your global team. The tutorial teaches you 3 abilities; Tap (single target attack), Swipe (multi-target attack), Ult (depending on the medal.) Your avatar can posses 5 medals in total, and [1]friend can tag along. That means, (at full Keyblade level) you're allowed to have 5 + [1] attacks. As you plunder the map, and defeat enemies you generate special energy. Each medal has a unique power, that can be used when enough Special is accumulated. Using these combination of moves with your combination of heroes(medals) - you must clear each zone in search of Keyblade materials and Avatar Coins. Your skill tree is set up unlike any RPG I've encountered on mobile. As you progress through the game you acquire costume sets - each possessing a mini skill-tree that unlocks with Avatar Coins.

Playtime is determined with AP, which accumulates faster than most mobile RPGs. Although most missions only require a small amount of AP, your daily and weekly missions consume it all. Randomly, raid bosses spawn during your quests. These bosses are difficult and steal a lot of AP, but at least when you die - completion opens to your party. You have any live-cooperative action, but KHXU does have a great social platform.

Creativity
Let's start with the overall concept of Kingdom Hearts: X Unchained. It's setup to run the same as every other mobile RPG, yet the importance of party position seems more relevant than faction warfare. You're not able to PVP until you've grinded 130 missions, so team raiding is the only early game multiplayer option. This is the only negative drawback I see, but this also creates a leaderboard without dilution. Ultimately, I can see Kingdom Hearts only losing about 10% of their player retention over this little nuance.

The clothes and outfits are dynamic only in the fact of appearance. The stats you've received will stay with you, no matter which outfit you change into. Overall I feel positive about having a rotating closet without status changes in a mobile RPG. It allows players to seek out individual looks, and takes stress off single item importance. That mechanic does pull away from the actual Role Playing Game concept - which is why I kind of feel KHXU is more a casual MMO than an strategy RPG. The artwork is fun, and close enough to the Playstation version that I wasn't too upset - but the fact that they took air combos out…. Kills me.

Value
In-Game purchasing (as of now) gives you jewels that can be exchanged for Medals. Aside from purchasing medals, the jewels can only be spent increasing your medal storage capacity. You are welcome to sell your medals for Munny, but you can accumulate revenue faster through questing and selling Moogles. Sure having a 5 or 6 star medals will make you stronger, but without leveling your Keyblade and your skill tree - you're still going to find yourself behind the curve. This mechanic slows down power-leveling, and stops “Supercelling” completely.

To get the most value from the store - spend your jewels on the Daily Deal. It's 30% cheaper than purchasing a single medal, and you won't waste money spending it on the 10 pack. Sure you have to wait each day to use it, but that's why they call it the daily deal! This is the second mechanic that hinders "Supercelling". The most value, is through the Daily Deals, which is set to be around the amount of your daily quest accumulation.

You can tell Square Enix designed this game to fit all age groups. You can't compete until you passed Mission 135, and by that time should at least have a good set of five star medals as well as a leveled Keyblade. Even with the ability to purchase additional medals, KHXU has still managed to keep the playing field extremely Fair. The depth of strategy in this game is deep enough to keep it competitive, and at the same time welcome Casual gamers into the genre. Free-To-Play, and amazingly smooth - Kingdom Hearts: X Unchained is the first game to break the Pay-To-Win Meta.

Speed Guide: Kingdom Hearts X Unchained

Buttons:

Home - Takes you back to home screen.
 Quests - See Quests*
 Equipment - See Equipment*
Avatar Board - See Avatar Board*
Medal List - Complete index of your medals (can sell from here)
 Shop - See Shop*
Other - Game options and info

Quests -
 Story - Main storyline
Special - Quests for Leveling and Loot
Events  - Quests for XP and Medals
PvP - Ladder (unlocked at quest 130)

Equipment -
Medal List - Complete index of your medals (can sell from here)
Swap Medals - Equip medals to your Keyblade
Keyblade Lv UP - Trade in loot gained from questing

Here you also level and evolve your medals. I recommend spending your jewels on the Daily Deal, to acquire three medals of higher tiers. Equipping them, and leveling your higher tiered medals will keep your questing at three-stars. Each medal and Keyblade also has a class. You do maximum damage on a rock-paper-scissors mechanic, Magic -> Power -> Speed. In combat, make sure you choose the correct medal for each enemy class.

Avatar Board - (Skill Tree and Aesthetics)
Progressing in the campaign should unlock various costume sets. These costumes have various colored nodes that add specific attributes. Spending Avatar coins unlocks these nodes, permanently granting you these stat increases as well as costume additions. If you don’t care for the costumes, you don't have to unlock the entire page to receive more. Saving your Coins for other pages and only spending them on stats, is a good trick for speed-leveling.

Shop:  Used to purchase Jewels for Medals and Storage
Daily Deal - Best Value (Avg. 4.2 Star medals)
10 packs - Worst Value (Avg. 3.5 Star medals)
One Medal - Avg Value (Avg. 3.8 Star medals)

Presents: (Gifts containing random items)
Mostly Jewels from the system, but also can be player gifts.

Combat:
Tap - Single Target Attack
Swipe - Multi-Target Attack
Drag - Special Attack (need required Special* amount)
Special Attack Gauges - Fills during combat when dealing damage, or picked up during questing.
Chain Attack - Quick taps in succession - Single Target Attack

Setting up your medals to ensure maximum combo damage is half the fight. Each medal has a unique ability. Try to keep a single target ULT, and a Multiple target ULT equipped on each Keyblade. Additional bonuses come with matching medal classes with your Keyblades class. Although you’ll get a dmg boost, you might find it hard to defeat some enemies. That being said, a recommended build is having a balanced Keyblade, with a Medal from each class equipped. You won’t be able to do this immediately (unless you have god draws), so I’d keep at least three medals in each class to ensure you can three-Star each quest.

Strategy:
Beating the Main campaign is the way to go. They don’t really give you any other option, but the grind isn't too bad. When choosing a Keyblade, first go to the store and acquire some medals. I recommend focusing on leveling your 4-5 star medals only, so if you don’t have any - draw some. Once you have you base set of medals, equip them to the Keyblade that responds best to their class. Not that you have a good start, choose a favorite medal and start leveling one at a time until it reaches lvl 50. Once you get it close, start on your next metal and continue with the grind.

Knowing when to use your special, and when to auto-attack is based on three things. Enemy HP, how many special gauges you have, and medal activation cost/order. If a single enemies HP are low, the an attack chain is the simplest procedure. If you are facing a 1v4 - a mixture of ults and swipes is your best bet. When facing a Raid boss, focusing their limbs first are the key. Use your multi-targeting abilities here to do the most damage and collect the most gauges. Lastly… this is a Square Enix game, so remember to look for hidden loot and constantly backtracking is fine.

See you all at mission 130!

MU Legend: Preview of What You Can Expect in the 1st Korean CBT

$

0
MU online, one of the few MMORPGs which has the best graphics 15 years ago, is now coming out with a sequel game, MU Legend (a.k.a MU2). It has been known that developers are not emphasizing much on creating high-end graphics for the game. This is to ensure that lower specifications graphics card will be able to run the game.

MU Legend made its first appearance in G-Star 2011. However, there is no further news of the game progress until recently whereby they announced that MU Legend will be having its first close beta testing on 20th April. Having burning questions about the game and what had happened during the 5 years period? Below are some of the questions answered by 3 MU Legend developers.

Closed beta contents similar to open beta

Q: How much game content will be released for the upcoming closed beta?

Developer: Contents released in this upcoming closed beta will be similar to open beta with most of the features enabled to users. However, not all in-game contents would be released. In addition, we hope to use this beta to solve bugs, improve game’s stability to ensure better gaming experience during open beta in future.

Q: Are there any news on launching MU Legend in the West?

Developer: As of now, we do not have any confirmation date of releasing MU Legend to other countries yet. However, we will ensure the release of MU Legend to China and the West as soon as possible without compromising on the quality of the game.

No definite roles (Tank, DPS, Support), types of weapons define your roles

Q: What classes are there in MU Legend?

Developer: Right now, there are only 4 classes, namely, Dark Lord, Blader, Whisperer and War Mage. Although there are very few classes to choose from, each class can equip different types of weapons to perform differently in game which makes them very versatile. The Dark Lord may appear as a tanker role but it can also take on as a support role and even as a crowd control role due to its massive AOE skills. Moving on, the Blader is a DPS class with disable skills such as stun, knockback. Whisperer is somehow similar to the archer class in MU Online, having the highest range and fulfilling as a DPS role. War Mage is a combination of mage and assassin class. Equipping a staff will allow players to unleash long range spells to damage enemies while equipping dagger or one-handed sword allow players to deal close range attacks to enemies.

>>> Read more: Gameplay Videos for 4 Classes

Q: How do we determine the different roles (Tank, DPS, and Support) according to the classes?

Developer: We have abolished the traditional determination of roles according to classes. All classes have a minimum level of DPS but require players to interchange their classes’ ability to define their role. For example, Dark Lord can change its ability to fit into a tanker role or a healer role. In addition, max levelled players will get to challenge end game dungeon with minimum of 5 players in a party. It requires players’ high level of coordination and teamwork to allocate each and everyone’s role perfectly in order to complete the dungeon. As of now, there are 7 skills for each class which differs in solo mode, party mode and PVP mode.

10vs10 small scale PVP mode being one of the highlights

Q: Will the 10vs10 PVP arena be the focus right now?

Developer: Due to the lower graphics limitations, we will only focus on small scale PVP mode such as the 10vs10. As of now, we have 1vs1 PVP mode, Siege Wars and 10vs10 PVP mode. Guild PVP are still under discussion and we might consider dispatching small batches of players to PVP instead of full fletch GvG style.

Q: What unique features will be brought into MU Legend from MU Online?

Developers: Features such as siege wars, blood castles, architectures, wings, mounts etc are still being retained from MU Online. Players will also see resemblance of MU Legend classes being silhouettes to MU Online classes.

Reducing confusion during battle, inclusion of cursors options

Q: What has been done to reduce confusions amongst the flashy skill effects during battles?

Developers: In MU Legends, we do not use auto lock-on target and players will always be centered in the middle of their screens. In addition, we have added cursors options so that players can customize it to fit their needs.

Q: Will you please give a short introduction on how MU Legend concept starts?

Developers: To be honest, MU Legend concept starts way back during the year 2005. However, the development process stopped. The idea got brought back only during the year 2011. We have around 60 internal developers as well as some external sources working on the game.

Q: Will we see an overlapping of player base for MU Online and MU Legends?

Developers: We do hope that MU Legend can attract players who once loved and played MU Online. MU Online which has a history of more than 10 years had built a strong player base. Thus, MU Legend will not have any impact or influence in this aspect.

Artix’s Big Adventure Quest- A Review Now in 3D!

Artix Entertainment has created quiet a big project from the usual games it’s created: a whole 3D game based in the world of the original Adventure Quest games. This is a big leap from the usual 2D/2.5D browser games th at most of their games have been so far. I was given the chance to play the pre-beta stage of this and have traveled around to see what this has to offer. So, here’s the big question: How did they do?

CUSTOMIZATION: The character customization is simple, but still nice. At the moment you can change your hair and it’s color, skin tone, and can choose to be a boy or a girl. In other AdventureQuest games, you could go to the Barber Shop in town to customize your hair, and one of them even allowed you to change gender. Currently, the Barber Shop is also in this game, but it’s closed at the moment.

CONTROLS: You can use either the WASD keys or arrow keys to move, spacebar to jump, and either click battle or use 1-5 on your keyboard. The cooldown for some of the actions (especially for warriors in my opinion) seem a little bit too long, but playing in a group remidies the cooldowns and you can strategize easier like this. You can also use the tab button on your keyboard to aim at the enemy, so you can finally get that. The camera is able to be altered as well by using the right or left mouse button. It’s very simple to get used to, and seems to be a nice layout for those going to use a tablet or phone in the future for this game.

The layout as of the pre-beta. Apparently, the alpha looked quite differently.

SYSTEMS: Currently you can play this game on internet explorer, opera, or firefox since Unity3D is about to be wiped out. Because of this, Artix is going to Steam. They are also going to allow the game to be played on Android and Apple phones as well. No matter what platform you will be on, you will be able to play with others altogether, which seems like a really awesome idea.

DESIGN: The game is very stylized, retaining the original concept from the previous games. Some NPCs look older than their older people, the town looks as if it did in the 2.5/2D game. With max graphics on, it looks very stunning, and still looks very well when all the settings are low.  For some reason though with low graphics at the moment, there seems to be a texture bug when playing on my laptop.

The left is max graphics settings, and the right is the lowest graphics settings (with the texture bug).

CLASSES: The current classes are as follows: Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and Guardian. You can change this at anytime and are not restricted to just one class. All you need is the right weapon, and you’re good to go.

GAMEPLAY: Like a lot of games, you will be getting a plethora of quests from NPCs. The quests are either to kill monsters or find items really, just like the typical stuff many gamers are used to. However, the dialogue makes it worth not skipping a single word. The only downside to these is that sometimes you might not know what the monsters you’re looking for look like until you hunt them down and finally find the enemy.

Really, the dialogue is amazing in this.

WORLD: The world looks so cute, but a bit empty. The main town looks just like the usual Adventure Quest town, but remodeled into a 3D environment – and for those that have played the old games before, they will be happy to see that not much has changed from the little town, and there’s a welcoming fountain as well! This is just a minor gripe of mine,  but outside the town there just isn’t much to do at the moment other than kill, kill, kill. It’s also a bit difficult to find where you are currently since there isn’t exactly a map at the moment, but if you are lost, you can warp back to the town.

SO, IN A NUTSHELL…
PROS: Funny dialogue, very stylized, multiple platforms, cute character designs/customizations, and nice costumes, Stays true to other Adventure Quest games, ability to change classes easily

CONS: Finding the monsters can be a bit hard at first, world at the moment feels kind of empty a bit, minor bugs.

Overall, I give this game a 8.5/10.  It’s a little bit flawed, but very fun and quirky!
Maybe for future updates, they could add a bit more life, maybe have a map and show where each quest is or where they are in the game’s world, or even perhaps show images of how the monster(s) look for the given quest they are doing. What do you think about the game?

Adventure Quest 3D is currently in its Pre-Beta stage, and the closed beta will begin in the summer of 2016.

Mobile Game Review - EvilBane: Rise of Ravens "Finally Live PVP in Action RPG"

EvilBane: Rise of Ravens
“Weapon focused Action RPG with Heavy PVP framework”

Gameplay
Dropped into a war between men and gods, you choose from three classes depending on your fighting style to aid the current King. In search of the sacred amulet, you open a portal to past to stop Lucifer from world domination. The tutorial is brief, as it walks you through EvilBanes menu and upgrade format. Then, like most Action RPGs you lose all your armor and abilities before beginning. Aside from your abilities, you have an attack and evade button. Your evade does a short range tumble, that honestly doesn't do much early game. It seems the attack and move speed of most enemies, are faster than your evade? Makes me want to just hack-n-slash, instead of strategically fight the mobs - and that might kill it for me.

With its optimized graphics, I haven't experienced any in-game lag or choppiness. EvilBane does seem to load the entire map, which means the quests will be kept short. The cinematics are great, the storyline isn't too bad, but it's unfortunate there isn't a way to view your story progress. This makes the importance of the campaign minimal, and doesn't allow enough player-to-hero connection. Maybe that was intentional, because switching between champions doesn't reset progress. It'll make leveling each class much easier, and help with long-term player retention.

They may have some (menu) screen calibration issues - at times the back button doesn't seem to function. (Using the mobile device's back button remedies this.) But, without a loading animation it feels frozen… if you experience this just hold tight, it'll load. I haven't experienced any issues in combat, and scanning over threads the PVP experience seems perfect. Playing in the arena it's finally live PVP, you should download the game for this reason alone. Guild battles are automatic, but gives you chances to organize and buff your team based on three 3V3 rounds.

Creativity
The first mechanic that separated EvilBane from the Meta, is its use of Abilities. Depending on the quality of your weapon, you can have up to four abilities. These abilities change in type and number depending on your weapon choice. This is my favorite mechanic by far when it comes to a skill tree. Upgrading multiple weapons will give you a variety of skills to choose from, without having to reset skill points. Obtaining legendary weapons of a different class is no longer a set back, when you have interchangeable heroes.

Aside from the dynamic creatures you encounter throughout the campaign, the time they spent on animating the attacks gives them personality. Fighting each boss takes time, and although you do have to tank damage - timing your abilities are key. When fighting in the arena, countering and opponents ability, or dodging them depends on your playstyle. Lastly, I just want to bring some attention to the combat sequences. They could have given you the standard death-fade sequence - most Mobile RPGs are choosing. Instead, you get a great cinematic - that makes you feel good about questing.
One issue I have to bring into notice, is how much privacy this game asks for. Compared to the standard MMO and RPG games, EvilBane is asking for almost three times as much. We also have to give them permission to keep running the apk in the background (com.netmarble.ravgl.permission.CD2_MESSAGE). I'd recommend moving this game more cloud oriented, and stop being so app-intrusive. For this, I bumped you down a point.

Value
EvilBane is doing a great job giving advertising during launch. But with the plethora of downloads, we are experiencing quite a few bugs. They don't seem to be streamlined errors, rather sporadic programming issues that seem to stem from in-game content synchronization. The main bug that could really hurt EvilBane, is the lvl 25 gift - that some players aren't receiving. Rushing through the campaign, speed grinding through all hours of the night just to be disappointed by a bug :/. Might want to send out a few presents Netmarble.

Free-To-Download. You guessed it, my first visit to the store and you're able to purchase everything. The chance of this game every making it into eSports is gone. Although I can guarantee it's success as a competitive action RPG, the choice to sell the game was a mistake. There is going to be clear level gaps when people start to Supercell, what's worse - your PVP ranking is permanent. Seasons will reset, but the average gamer will never have a chance at the top of the ladder. That being said, it's still currently the most entertaining Mobile Action RPG I've played this year.

Combat:
Vango (Berserker)
Slower attack speed, with low HP but high Damage.
I’d recommend only dodging spells and abilities, and tanking the rest of the damage knowing you trade better.

Luke (Knight)
Mid-range fighter, with the highest HP.
Has the most ways playstyles, only negative thing is he can't trade damage well.

Khara (Assassin)
Highest attack speed, with high damage output.
Can be used in two ways; poking the enemy with short burst combos, or long chains. Trades almost evenly with berserker.

Strategy:
In theory - Khara beats Vango, Vango beats Luke, and Luke beats Khara. Because of the rock paper scissor mechanic, you also are able to play all three of the characters evenly. The only way to be competitive in this game, is to unfortunately spend at least $15. If not, grinding will probably take you 2 months to catch up, but you'll never really catch up until you start limit breaking. The main campaign get hard extremely fast. Thankfully, you have other options to help the leveling process. Spend most of your time in the dungeon, and only PVP when you achieved solid resting points for your character (you’ve have a good weapon and armor set on your hero).

Guild battles are tricky, because you never know if your enemy buffed his champions. It’s only a cool 3,000 coin, but that’ll start adding up after awhile. Choosing which buff to takes depends on your team set-up and the enemies line-up. If you have mainly Berserkers - take the crit buff. If you’re heavy in Knight’s the def buff might be a better solution. Save all the money you can for leveling your armor, that gets expensive at higher levels. (500,000 upgrade for Mythic) When facing an opponent in PVP, remember you can counter their abilities with your own. Watch for the charging animation, and either roll away, or counter with your own to inflict a stun. This is the most important factor of the game, and I’ll end on that note.
