Pico Interactive Inc.
is set to shake up the world of VR head mounted displays (HMD) with the reveal of the Pico Goblin, Pico’s brand new all-in-one VR headset, at this year's E3 from June 13-15. All attendees who want to be the first in North America to check out this innovative and immersive product can visit Pico’s booth in the South Hall at booth #3033. Pico will also feature its flagship Pico Neo CV and select games at the expo.

The Pico Goblin was created with the consumer in mind – its innovative design gives users instant access to VR games, apps and videos, and is completely untethered and ultra-portable. Unlike any other VR headset currently on the market, the Pico Goblin gives people unequalled freedom to play, anywhere and anytime.
With a truly stand-alone design, the Goblin is a VR headset which takes advantage of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor to deliver a lightweight, fully immersive VR experience for gamers. The two high-resolution 70Hz VR Displays combine to give users a resolution of 2.5K, making the Goblin ideal for casual gaming, as well as watching VR Videos and engaging with interactive CGI experiences. Equipped with three-degrees-of-freedom (3DoF) head tracking technology, the Goblin provides total freedom of head movement for users, and comes with a 3DoF tracking controller to navigate within virtual environments.

“We created the Pico Goblin to liberate people from clunky VR technology,” said Ennin Huang, vice president of design, Pico Interactive Inc. “There’s no complex technical set-ups, attached wires or need for a Phone. As a consumer first company, we want to make the barriers to entry for completely stand alone VR headsets as low as possible, while offering flexible options for users. The Pico Goblin will do just that, and at an affordable price.”

E3 attendees will get the first-look opportunity with the Pico Goblin hardware along with a selection of gaming and entertainment applications. The Pico Neo CV also will be available for demonstrations with a selection of games.

Starbreeze Studios and Overkill Software debut Payday based mobile game today, and revealed the VR mode for Payday 2. Called Payday: Crime War, the mobile game puts players into the shoes of heisters or cops who will face off in the multiplayer PvP matches.

Iconic Payday locations such as the Bank and the Golden Grin Casino will be brought into the mobile game. Players can unlock upgrades and get more powerful gear in the game. Take a look at some screenshots of Payday: Crime War below.

The VR mode for Payday 2 provides you immersive experience as a bank robber. You will be able to play the entire game in VR, and there's no extra charge for the VR mode, as long as you own the game and a HTC Vive. The VR support will be added later this year and you can take a look at the trailer below.

Wild West Online Debuts as a Red Dead Redemption Style Open World MMO Shooter

Form or join gangs to break or defend the law in the wild, vast western American world, you can play as cops or robbers in Wild West Online, an indie MMO shooter developed by 612 Games and published by DJ2. Wild West Online takes plenty of cues from Red Dead Redemption franchise, said Stephan Bugaj, the creative vice president of DJ2.

In addition to the fact that you can play with hundreds of other players in the seamless open world, you can also expect to see the sandbox elements such as resource gathering, camp building, and a crafting system that relies on finding and learning recipes. But don't take it wrong, the game isn't like those sandbox survival games because it has a story, characters, and gameplay-driven motives. So my guess is the game is like GTA, where you have a main story and at the same time, the ability to roam freely.

You will be able to specialize your role in the game, and other than the outlaw and enforcer roles, you can be gatherers or farmers and others.

Wild West Online is still in early development, and it plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign at the end of May and hope to raise $250,000 from the community. However, the game isn't going to take years to develop like most indie games, and it's expected to release around fall 2017.

NCsoft has revealed the Q1 2017 earnings that registers a decline in sales in MMORPGs like Lineage, Aion, Blade & Soul and Guild Wars 2 compared with the same period in 2016. Lineage II is the only game that sees an increase in sales in Q1 2017. On the other hand, NCsoft confirms big change in the development team in Lineage Eternal, that the project will be led by a different developers.

NCsoft doesn't say who will lead the Lineage Eternal team but the company's CFO mentions that the game doesn't "reflect NCsoft’s characteristics". Apparently the result of last year's Korean closed beta is a disappointment and looks like the game will receive a huge overhaul and push back the second closed beta.

Last week we enjoyed the RAGNAROK FESTIVAL and after today's Press Conference, the much awaited information about Ragnarok Online Philippine's relaunch is finally here!

With the combined strength of Electronics Extreme Managing Director Mr. Kamphee "Ken" Piromward and Elite Global Sourcing CEO Mr. Johnny Paek, Ragnarok Online Philippines brings you... *drum roll*

1: Ragnarok Online Philippines will relaunch with FREE TO WIN Business Model. Which means that the game will be FREE TO PLAY and all key items can be obtained ingame!

2: Ragnarok Online Philippines will start its Closed Beta Test Mid of June 2017

3: Closed Beta Server Names will be... *drum roll* THOR and LOKI !!!

Read from Left to Right (L>>>R)

4: Open Beta or the Soft Launch of the game will be decided after ALL ISSUES found on Closed Beta Test are FIXED! (Answered via 1 on 1 Q&A)

5: Ragnarok Online Philippines will launch with Episode: REVO - CLASSIC
So what does REVO-CLASSIC means?

6: Revo Classic will start with Class 2-1: Which means the initial classes will only have 1 option for 2nd Class/Job. Swordsman can only become Knight, Thief to Assassin, Acolyte to Priest, Archer to Hunter, Mage to Wizard, and lastly Merchant to Blacksmith.

7: REVO-CLASSIC is not just Classic, but a revolutionized version of the classic RO! One of which is the availability of a massive world map! We can clearly see Juno, Amatsu and Aldebaran map below.

8: RO PH will not be a classic one if we do not have Morroc, So... Morroc will be restored!!!

9: Another Revolutionized + Classic feature of the upcoming Ragnarok Online relaunch are All mobs will return to their origibal spawn point and Ignore level differences between player and monster which is a Renewal Episode feature!
Sorry for the blurred picture T__T

In case you are not familiar with the Renewal: Ignore player and mobs level difference, this feature will enable a constant/unchanging EXP gain when a player kills a monster no matter how much the level difference between that player and monster. Pre-Renewal, if your character and the monster you kill have a level difference of more than 5, then the exp gain will be lesser and much less as the level difference gets higher (You won't get any exp when it reach 30+ level difference). This Renewal: Ignore player and mobs level difference will enable all players to farm exp whenever and whenever they want without bothering about the level difference. High level players can also boost low level players with this feature, so better make good friends asap!

10: They also discussed about the near future plans for the Ragnarok Online Philippines.

Within 6 months Class 2-2 will be UNLOCKED! Which means that there will be 2 2nd Job Options for every initial class unlike in 2-1. An Acolyte can now become Priest or Monk, Mage to Wizard or Sage, Archer to Bard (Male) or Dancer (Female), Merchant to Blacksmith or Alchemist, Swordsman to Knight or Crusader, Thief to Assassin or Rogue.

Within 1 to 2 years HIGH CLASS will be UNLOCKED! This will enable us to REBIRTH back to level 1 after reaching the max level of 99. This rebirth comes with a lot of powerful perks!

11: Ragnarok World Championship is back!!! As a Ragnarok Gamer and a RO World Champion, Mr. Ken iterates that it is one of his main goal to return RO World Championship Competition! This will bring back the immense fiery competition between guilds!

12: The very near future plans for the RO PH will be:
I guess the above picture speaks for itself.

They also shared some success stories from Ragnarok Online relaunch in Thailand!

More Question and Answer details on the next page!>>>

And then the Q&A session started...here are the questions that were answered:

Q: How about Cheats, Bots, Hacks etc? Do you have a build in system or plan to fight against these?
A: Yes we do! The Easy Anticheat (lol with the name) is a great success for Ragnarok Online Thailand with solid proof no bots found on the server.

I also asked a follow up question about the bots topic and they are both confident that the Easy Anticheat system will be able to detect, prevent and obliterate any bot/hack.

Q: Will multi client/box be allowed? If yes, what is the maximum number of clients allowed?
A: Up to 5 clients!

I was honestly shocked about this and my first reaction was "That's a whole party!". Having multiple computers + Max of 5 Clients opened on each PC at the same time, I myself will have an ARMY!

Q: Is there a limit to how many players can participate in the upcoming Closed Beta Test?
A: None.

So what are you waiting for?! Go HERE to start your registration for the upcoming Closed Beta Test!
Link:
http://2p.com/48378810_1/Ragnarok-Online-Philippines-Registration-Guide-by-ProtosX.htm

Q: Will some minor type of Bot softwares be allowed? For example, this bot software that allows us to easily vend or check all players who are selling in an area which enables us to easily access their vends?
A: We NEVER appreciate the BOT's. So that's a NO to any kind of BOT software.

*definitely agree!*

Q: Can you please elaborate or provide more details about the item mall items?
A: The item mall will sell vanity fashion items and items that will provide a very small boost to paying players. For example are the recent rewards from the RAGNAROK FESTIVAL which provides 1% EXP boost from monsters. Rest assured that the gap between paying and non paying players will be very small.

Q: What will be the Server Rate? (EXP and Drop rates)
A: It will be classic, x1!

Q: How can we contact GM's or Support team?
A: There will be an ingame live support chat system where you will be able to contact them directly.

Q: What will be the available payment methods for the game?
A: The classic top up cards and via online using credit cards.
How about paypal? T__T

Q:  Will there be an IP BLOCK or IP Restrictions?
A: "Technically" No.

Which technically means that you may use VPN's etc to connect in case there is. Lolz

Q: Will MAC OS be supported?
A: You have to install Windows OS. (So that's a NO)

Q: How about Mobile Devices?
A: The Ragnarok Online Philippines will only be a PC exclusive game.

I guess what is already being assumed are iOS and Android OS when they said "Mobile Devices" because we all know that there are a lot of mobile devices that have Windows OS and some even DUAL OS (Android+Windows OS in 1 device).

Q: How about the common known issue of GM's exploiting their GM Powers? (centered about GM's giving free rare items to their friends)
A: GM's will be watched with a watchful eyes. GM's in this version of Ragnarok Online will not have any access to ingame items and they will not be given the power to create items. All items in the game are traceable and will be checked.

I honestly think that this is just a conspiracy theory since i haven't experience receiving items from a GM. But a GM exploiting his given GM Powers to mess with players... I do believe that's real... Guilty AF.

Q: Will the mall fashion items be permanent or limited time?
A: There will be limited items but most are permanent.

Q: In a MOBA Dominated community, how do you think Ragnarok Online (a MMORPG) will perform?
A: From the recent relaunch in Thailand where we won the best game of 2016, we are confident that the game will flourish here in the Philippines.

Actually just look at the videos and pictures from last week RAGNA FEST where there's a very long multi floor line of players who went to the event. That speaks for itself.

Q: Will the formula for game mechanics/system be the same with the existing Ragnarok Online games?
A: We do not want to divulge the exact formulas but it is basically the same game with some modifications. You will discover the formulas once the game CBT starts.

Q: Will Guilds be able to form alliances?
A: Yes!

Q: Is there a built in Live Streaming system on Ragnarok Online Philippines?
A: We think that the 3rd party live streaming software's will do best.

Q: Will there be a 7vs7 Tournament?
A: There will be Arena, War of Emperium and World Championship. We will focus more on those features and events.

Q: Will the game have a NPC where we can easily change job?
A: None. It will be classic. You have to do the Job Change Quest.

The following are the questions I asked during the 1 on 1 session. I was the Earliest Bird to reach the venue so I was honored to be the first to be on the 1 on 1 QA session.

Q: Will there be a Real Money to Zeny conversion or vice versa?
A: None.

Q: Are you ready to fight against DDoS attacks?
A: Yes, we are confident that our security system will be able to prevent and in case, minimize the effect of a DDoS attack.

Q: You already mentioned that the game is basically a Free to Play, but will there be a ViP or optional Premium Subscription feature?
A: None.

Q: Do we need to download another game client when OBT arrives?
A: We are hoping and will do our best to make the CBT client upgradeable to OBT/Launch so that players will not be required to download another game client.

Q: Are you sure that Easy Anticheat will be able to detect and prevent Pseudo-Random Auto Clicker software?
A: Yes, we tested it and it works on Thailand that is why we are confident that the Easy Anticheat system will be able to prevent any bot/hack.

Q: Will the Ragnarok Online PH server be physically located in the Philippines or will it be placed in another country?
A: For security reasons we cannot answer that question.

I can't think of any other question to ask and I personally appreciate their welcome and warm treatment to everyone who came to the press conference.

Do you have any question that was not answered? Are you happy with the current plans for the relaunch of Ragnarok Online? Please tell us on the comment section below.

Thanks!

Life is Feudal First Impressions, A Medieval Adventure Awaits

$

0
If like me you’ve been dreaming of experiencing a realistic world set in the medieval ages, then you must have been keeping an eye out for Life is Feudal. This massively multiplayer game takes over the winning recipe of Bitbox's first sandbox role-playing game, Life Is Feudal: Your Own, a title that made its way in the top 10 Steam games, selling 380,000 within two weeks of its release. But where Your Own’s servers could only accommodate a maximum of 64 players, the MMO has continents with a capacity of 10,000 players, or even more.

Like any good multiplayer, the game begins with the creation of a character. Immediately, things are clear: we are in a pure medieval world, so do not look for magicians or exotic races. Here you’ll only have humans of different ethnicities, and stats will be based off reality. Strength, for example, increases the amount of objects the character can carry, while intelligence increases the speed at which the character learns skills. In addition, skill points are to be divided between craft skills and combat skills which, are all important in this world. The customization, while nothing to brag about, does a great job at assisting the immersion.

Once your character is created and a name is chosen, you will find yourself on the edge of a river where a tutorial explains the basics of the game. As always, in the beginning, everything is simple. The game’s controls are not any different from what you are probably used to, allowing your character to move using either the direction keys, the WASD keys. The character can also jump, run and crouch. You are then given an outfit, the opportunity to discover the interface of equipment and inventory management. The latter is rather nice, represented in the form of a large window, like a bag in which the objects are put in bulk and organized by sliding / depositing.

Eager to give crafting a try, I quickly gather a branch, flint stones and wild plant fibers to make my first axe. The branch is easily retrievable on any tree, without any tools, while the fibers and flint are found lying about. Once these are gathered, simply follow the instructions to create the axe. I promptly use mine to take down a tree and spend about an hour trying to get some decent meat for my character.

Speaking of, the combat is realistic and does a great job at integrating the direction of the attack as well as the power of the blow, depending on the movement of the character before the attack. This is clearly far from obvious to master, especially since there is nothing to train and the creatures you can test your skill against will not be allowing you the leisure of using them as punchbags. You can expect PvP battles to be just as challenging. And the presence of PvP is rather heavy in Life is Feudal. As you progress, it will even be possible to create siege weapons to take down the villages of other players, which is something to look forward to.

As for building, even something as simple as a cabin takes a lot of work. Indeed, Bitbox intends to keep things as close to reality as possible. Thus, the first step involves flattening the field where you intend to build your home. Once this foundation created, you will need to carry boards and beams over to the location, which involves a lot of walking back and forth. Amusing anecdote, I got lost a bunch of times as I looked for the area where I was building my cabin, mostly due to the fact that the map lacks coordinates. But soon enough I started recognising landmarks, and even used screenshots to move about more accurately. It doesn't take me long either to meet a few players I happen to get along with, and we decide to build a village together.

If I had to voices concerns for this game, it would be that it is a dreadfully long road to level your skills and that they are penalized when you die. The concept here requires to create the same objects again and again. Regardless of the path you choose, you will need to progress by using the skills and therefore perform the same actions in a loop. Furthermore, you would need materials to level these skills. And gathering them is no easy task either with all the dangers that you could run into and that could make you lose skill levels. Thankfully, this is somewhat balanced out with an alignment system. The more crimes you commit, the more skills you will lose. Alternatively, it also means that if you do not commit crimes, your death penalty will be negligible.

Conclusion

Life of Feudal is clearly not a game to be taken lightly. Without a defined class, it offers great freedom, which is as much a good thing as a bad thing. The system of assigning points to skills and stats gives the opportunity to do what one wants but the hardcore side resulting in hard penalties after a death is not something that will please everyone, and is likely to put off many players. While I myself am fine with this challenge, should the developers wish to reach a larger audience, they might want to introduce a server without this penalty. Regardless, Life is Feudal is an outstanding game that deserves a try at least.

Ragnarok Mobile is one of the mobile version of the memorable MMORPG Ragnarok Online. This week the game moved to a new episode opening its doors to a new class. The MERCHANT Class is finally unlocked and the MERCHANT GUIDE is now complete!

Please CLICK HERE or use the link below for the Merchant Guide.
http://2p.com/48313683_1/MERCHANT-GUIDE-RAGNAROK-MOBILE-by-ProtosX.htm

Please take note that the game is in Chinese Language and the server is in China. However this does not prevent anyone, including players who know nothing about the Chinese language, to learn and enjoy the game. In fact the game is so easy to understand that even I who also know nothing about Chinese was able to make a multiple guides.

I would like to begin this guide from the Blacksmith Job Change quest. I will discuss a lot of stuff, about skills, builds and gameplay which are all based on my own gameplay, opinion and experience. Please take note that you DO NOT have to follow each step/builds/stats and you can do whatever you like throughout the process as long as it makes you happy. I highly suggest that you yourself try to find the gameplay and build which suits your taste.

Let's begin!!!

~Blacksmith Class Introduction~
Blacksmith is the 2nd job upgrade of Merchant. The Blacksmith class have multiple battle enhancement skills, new attack skills (AoE), also crafting and convenient skills. Blacksmith, just like in RO1, will surely replace the Agi Knight builds. Blacksmith is a power not to be taken lightly as it can easily obliterate a group of enemies in a short time. This class is also a force to reckon in PvP Arena! Blacksmith and move up to 3rd Job Whitesmith when it reach Blacksmith Job level 40 (Around Base level 65-70ish)

~What to Expect as a Blacksmith~
Base on my experience, Blacksmiths are OP even without a nice gear especially for battle PURE STR builds. Having Cart Attack (Merchant) at 750% that only uses 10SP at level 10, you don't need to spend stat points on your INT to get enough SP Regen to keep using the skill. Blacksmith also have nice high damage AoE Skill (2), convenience skills that will increase your zeny intake, money back etc and best of all the capability to craft ELEMENTAL WEAPONS!!!

~Blacksmith Job Change Guide~
You may acquire the Blacksmith Job change quest once your character reach Base and Job level 40.

Please proceed to the familiar Job Change Building in Prontera.

Talk to the Blacksmith NPC to start the Job change quest.

Please take note that there are 2 ways to become a blacksmith.

First is through quest and second is to pay 2.5M to this shady NPC. I highly suggest that you do not.

After declining the offer, please go back to the Blacksmith NPC inside the Job Change Building.

You will be given a treasure box item for the Job change quest.

Decline the second offer by selecting the option below. You may now proceed to the Job Change quest.

The next place you need to be is in Geffen. Please use the Kafra Teleport Service to make it faster.

Please talk to the Whitesmith NPC to start your Question and Answer portion.

I suck at math and I can't understand Chinese. If you are like me, then don't worry! I got your back!

After completing the first set of Q&A, the NPC will ask you to go to Morroc for your next quest.

Please use the Kafra Teleport service and talk to the Male Whitesmith NPC in Morroc.

You will then need to talk to a Female Whitesmith on the same map.

Again, I got your back! Please follow the answers below:

After completing the second set of Q&A, please give the treasure box item to the Female Whitesmith NPC.

Please use the Kafra Teleport service and talk to the whitesmith NPC in Geffen.

CONGRATULATION YOU ARE NOW A BLACKSMITH!!!

~Blacksmith Leveling Guide~
PLEASE GET AN ATTACK NEKO PET ASAP!
Although you can easily 1 hit kill all normal monsters within your level, a neko pet is still beneficial to have around especially when its pretty cheap!

Level 40-45: With PURE STR Build you can easily 1 hit kill bees and butterfly mobs in Geffen Forest.

Now that my blacksmith reached level 45, I moved to ant hell for higher EXP Gain. See my 1 hit kill PURE STR Build in action in the video below!

~Blacksmith Stat Builds~
Please take note that my personal build is PURE STR. A lot of players are asking me about their concerns with equipment's, hit, dodge etc. As I have mentioned earlier, this is my build and you DO NOT have to follow it exactly as I make it. However, I will do my best to explain why my build goes this way.

First things First, my EQUIPMENT SET. Without this set my PURE STR Battle Build will NOT WORK as intended.

Please take note that Cats Blessing STR SET and my Weapon and Off Hand will stay as they are until end game or until when a better set is released. I will probably replace the Moon Rings in case I am able to earn more zenies.

Weapon: 神圣大驹短剑
Stats: ATK+240, STR+5. Have higher chance of having ATK+30 for 15 sec when doing normal attack and stackable up to 3 times.
Bonus Stats: ATK+10% if STR reach 95 // ATK+5% if STR reach 120 // ATK+5% if STR reach 150. (If STR reach 150 the total bonus stats will be ATK+20%)
This weapon is perfect for my PURE STR Build.

Off Hand: 蔷薇姬的手镯
Stats: DEF+31 and Ignore 25% of targets Def
Another great equipment to boost my Pure Str Build attack

Armor + Garment + Boots: STR Cats Blessing set.
Stats:

DEF +46 MaxHP+1000
Def +25 Flee +15
Def +22 Movement SPD+5% AGI+2
Set Stats: STR+5, Gear's ASPD+5%

You may opt for the VIT Cats Blessing which also have HP and SP Recovery, but honestly merchants do not require too much SP.

Accessories: Moon Ring (
月亮胸针)
Stats: ATK+42 MaxSP +75, increase SP recovery +5%
You may opt for the upgraded clip(红玛瑙发夹)
. I rather use Moon Rings one as i also have a Sniper on the same account. I actually plan on purchasing upgraded clip once I sold my vip tickets.

My CORE STAT is nothing but STR.

In case you haven't noticed... At a very early level of 45 My total STR is already 120..which means, I now have a total of +15% Attack bonus from my weapon!!!

Question: So how about HIT RATE? Does your character miss all the time?
Answer: First of all, I have a Priest that provides me with +20 DEX. Another thing is my character have a level 10 Weapon Research which provides +30 Hit. Another thing is, i have a Bag which also gives +5 Hit and you can easily find cheap head gears that give hit too! So why would you waste your precious stat points on DEX?

Question: Can you keep your SP full?
Answer: Yes. With a Priest to bless and Magni also with my 2 Moon Rings My SP is always at full.

~Blacksmith Skill Builds~
At Base level 45 my skill level is 16 in which points are spent on the following skills:

11-Year-Old Kid Bought a Used GTA 5, Found a Bag of Meth in the Box

Kayla McAllister's 11-year-old boy bought a used GTA 5 and found a small pack of meth in the game box. Kayla said she was with her son on Sunday, May 7th, in a GameStop store and purchased a copy of used Grand Theft Auto V. When they installed the game at home, her son found the suspicious stuff hidden in the game instructions. The police later confirmed that it wasmethamphetamine.

On Facebook, Kayla McAllister writes "Today, I was with my son at the GameStop in Tallahassee to exchange old games and get new ones. When he opened the book of one of the used games, we found a pack of fucking meth . Obviously, the game was not properly controlled when it came to the store, and through that negligence I could have lost my child. Fortunately, he brought the parcel directly to us and asked what that is."

Similar story happened before. In September 2016, another eleven-year-old kid from Louisiana bought a used game in a GameStop store and he also found a bag of meth. So when Kayla posted her son's story, she was even accused of "stealing" the story. Kayla also has a 3-year-old daughter at home, and she said "I could not sleep at all. While rummaging the son's games, the daughter could have found the drugs and this story might have gone differently. She could have died, and I would have to ask myself where the drugs came from."

GameStop contacted the mother and offered her a new video game. She refused and wrote on Facebook: "Please check all used games you buy. Just the thought that one of my kids can be hurt by something crazy is killing me. So PLEASE, CONTROL ALL."

It seems that Microsoft enters the virtual reality game market with a VR MMO. A job post indicates that the Xbox Mixed Reality team is working on a "mixed-reality" MMO and they are looking for a Senior Design Manager who will work in the Redmond office in Washington. The job vacancy specifies that the person will work with "MR / VR."

There's no specific detail on the game. All we know now is Microsoft is trying to create a "massive social and entertainment experience for PC and console". In addition, the company is looking for talent with "expertise and passion to create social systems and immersive experiences."

In 2002, the Elder Scrolls took players to the province of Morrowind, and 15 years later, the series will return to the territory with The Elder Scrolls Online's upcoming Morrowind expansion. The environment of Morrowind has received a "remaster" in the MMO, but remained recognizable to players of the original Morrowind game. The comparison video below shows how the new Morrowind has been improved in The Elder Scrolls Online.

The graphics of both games have been turned to "max" in the video, and The Elder Scrolls Online's resolution is set at 2160p, while the original Elder Scrolls: Morrowind is at 1920 x 1440.

Mobile Games Make as Much as Movies and That's Why Other Mediums Have to Change

$

Unless you've been living under an 8-bit rock for the last few years, you'll have noticed that mobile gaming is now a booming sector in the industry. In fact, in 2016, portable platform games and the like not only raked in record amounts, they helped the mobile medium become the biggest earner in the gaming world.

"iPhone 4G" (CC BY 2.0) by ArabCrunch

Midway through 2016, analysts at Newzoo predicted that mobile gaming revenue would top $36.9 billion by the close of the year. That figure would have made it more than PC revenue ($31.9 billion) and console gaming revenue ($29 billion) for 2016. As it transpired, SuperData Research found that reality actually exceeded expectations and mobile gaming generated $40.6 billion last year. To put that in context, that total is an increase of 18 percent on 2015 and, more impressively, the same amount of money taken by movie box offices around the world in 2016.

Whichever way you slice it, mobile gaming is now biggest player in the game and something developers from other corners of the industry should be looking to for inspiration. Of course, console and PC games can't simply abandon all their old values and try to imitate mobile games. Aside from the practical and logistical differences, PC and console games are still making a lot of money for developers. However, in a gaming culture that's rapidly changing, there's nothing wrong with taking a few pointers from the new (bigger) kid on the block.

With this in mind, we've picked out four things PC and console games could try if they want to increase their appeal, be more like mobile games and, importantly, make a bit more of the green stuff.

Microtransactions Make Major Profits

"iZettle Mobile Payments" (CC BY 2.0) by Håkan Dahlström

Perhaps the biggest reason mobile games have become prolific profit making machines over the last few years is the use of microtransactions. Using what's known as the freemium or free-to-play model, mobile game developers will allow users access to the main game for free but structure the action in such a way that purchases will allow gamers to play more often or more easily. Of course, players can get by in games without making a microtransaction (i.e. buying an upgrade, bonus or time extension for a small fee), but it definitely helps to pay. In fact, according to research by Swrve in 2016, 48 percent of mobile revenue came from just 0.19 percent of users. However, the average spend per user (i.e. in-game purchases) has increased from $22 in 2014 to $24.33 in 2016. What this shows is that microtransactions might not be hugely popular, but they are effective and this is something the developers at League of Legends have taken notice of. The multiplayer online battle arena game has been around since 2009 and while it's a favorite of pro gamers on the tournament circuit, it's also highly profitable. SuperData found that the game generated $19.6 billion in 2016 and much of this was due to the in-game payments. Indeed, despite being free to download and play, paid-for upgrades and new skins have allowed developer Riot Games to generate $150 million per month.

Timed Bonuses Keep the Action Flowing

"Timer at 0" (CC BY-SA 2.0) by numb3r

Another technique PC game developers could use to increase revenue is in-game bonuses and time-released rewards. One sector of the mobile gaming industry that relies heavily on bonuses is the casino world. For example, when a player joins Betway Casino, they don't have to pay anything to download the iOS. In fact, they can actually play games such as Mega Moolah or Poker Pursuit for free. However, to encourage players to make a deposit and, in turn, encourage them to maintain a steady level of activity, the provider gives new players a welcome bonus worth more than $1,000. To unlock the bonus, players must make a deposit and then wager a certain amount. Eventually, the money is released and they can do as they please with it. This system is similar to the time-released rewards offers by games such as Top Gear: Stunt School SSR. Every time a player loads up the game they are given a new reward or a chance to spin a roulette wheel to win a prize. Because BBC Worldwide's programmers have set the game to release a new bonus each day, it's in the player's best interest to play as regularly as possible - which is yet another reason why mobile games are so successful.

Episodic Releases Create a Story

"511459774" (Public Domain) by sac_sae

The final trait PC and console games could adopt in order to improve their profits is embracing episodic releases. Take, for instance, a game such as Angry Birds. What started off as a single game has now turned into a franchise with "episodes" of Angry Birds covering all manner of genres. From Angry Birds on Valentine's Day to Angry Birds Space Xmas, fans of the game have now come to expect a new release each time a major holiday or season is on the horizon.

Releasing games in this way essentially gives players something to look forward to but, more importantly, it pulls them into a storyline and in fact, it shares some traits with the Software-as-a-Service model that even Microsoft has adopted in recent years. Much like a TV show that leaves you on a cliffhanger, each episodic game flows into the next and you simply have to play the next episode in order to continue the story. This idea is something Hitman has adopted in recent years. Yes, the latest release will feature HDR and 4K support to make it look better than ever, but the most impressive move by IO Interactive is to make Hitman episodic. As noted by the developers, 2017's release is "a truly episodic AAA game experience, with a major live component." Indeed, with just one location (Paris) and prologue mission, the idea is that you'll now go on a journey with the deadly assassin. This, in theory, should give fans of the franchise something to get invested in and, in turn, increase the game's earning potential.

Use a Mobile Hook to Make More

What mobile games have taught us in recent years is that you need to give players more reasons to play. Of course, that doesn't mean you can just create a mobile-styled game for PC players (i.e. Neon Space 2 might look like a mobile game but it was a "lazy" flop). However, if you can hook players with the techniques outlined above, you stand a good chance of making some money. Yes, creating an attractive game with lots of action is great, but if a player can play for an hour and then not return for a week or two, it's not good. Mobile games have overcome this and that's why they're now the standard bearers for the industry and something developers from other mediums should aspire to.
